V-700 in action

Hello folks, well - I'm really proud to say that I've finally done it:  Completed our first song on my new setup around the V-700.  Everything worked really well. I have to say, though, when it came to editing I still used the mouse a lot as I find it a bit slow to work with the shuttle wheel to cut, scroll, etc ... BUT - recording and mixing was a blast!! I can't imagine how I did what I did before the V-700 ...

Alright, for those interested in hearing the result - here's a link to give it a listen (just click on the 'HI' button once you're at the site).  Thanks for your interest, and thanks to all of you who provided answers in my darkest hours!

Heinz.

Hey Heinz that was great! Sounded close to a mastered mix to my poor excuse for ears.... was it? Very well polished and produced. Also was it recorded with the 700R as the front end? Be interesting to hear what the signal paths were etc..?

    Nice one...

    Hi Heinz,

Congrats on your first V-Studio 700 track! Nice job.

Did you use only the system for the entire process? Or did you also use some other hardware?

Never mind the great production overall but the dynamic range (about 8dB on my analyser) makes a BIG difference to the sound. Wonderful to hear music with such range. Loud AND dynamic. Well done Heinz.

Making me drool even more over a VS-700 now, although I know it's not just the tools that maketh a great track. :)

Whoa! Guys, this response exceeded my keenest expectations!  I thank you all for your time to listen and leave your comments! I can't tell you how much I appreciate that.  Now, let me go in detail:

Sacalait - Thanks for the praise man!  Yes it was 'Days Like That'! Thanks for listening

lavoll - thank you Sir!! Appreciate your time.

Mully - Thank you so much! Well, it wasn't mastered per se, but I did use the Boost11 plug on the master bus. What I mean by that is, I exported the completed project as a wav file, with the headroom on the mains, reinported it into a new project, put the Boost11 plug on the master and exported it again. The result was what you heard.  I still have to learn how to properly master my - any - songs, though.  I'll mention the signal path a little bit further down.

Scott - How nice to see you chime in!! Thank you for your interest! To answer your question: Yes, the V-700 was used for recording (vocals, keyboard, percussion - all guitars and bass were recorded at my partner's home studio 4000 miles across Canada); editing and arranging (here, though, as mentioned, I admit I used the mouse more than the 700C), and mixing.  And no - no outboard hardware.  I do have the Liquid Mix but didn't use it in this song.

Steve - Thanks man! Appreciate it!

Richard - Wow, what a compliment! Thank you! I tried to achieve a punchy feel, for sure! You won't regret the purchase, I promise you that! :-)

Okay, now for the signal flow ... I used a Rode NT1-A for microphone (Vocals and percussion), used the onboard preamps of the 700R (ie, no external converters or preamps) and went straight in into Sonar 8.5.  There I processed internally.  All guitars, as mentioned, were recorded by David, my partner out East.  He also records straight into Sonar using a small Peavey Mixer and I believe he used some Line6 software within Sonar ... For my keyboard I used a straight line-in into the V700R (for the piano) and for synth/SFX stuff I used Midi.

Thanks again you guys! You made my day

    Heinz.

    Hi Heinz,

One question... In addition to great dynamics, I noted the harmonic EQ content for your track was well balanced. Did you process the track with HarBal or similar 'magic' software/VST? Surely nothing inside the VS-700 or Sonar to do this work.

Yep, I am sure there will be no regrets on a purchase. Getting very close now!

Richard, I didn't use anything extraordinary to enhance or boost the harmonics. I've used a track EQ on almost every track, with that, and panning and reverb, I've tried to separate frequencies so that they won't clash or mask each other.  With respect to harmonics, pretty much all tracks have been slightly boosted in the upper high freqs; but nothing out of the ordinary. I've also used less compression than other engineers would have used, that opened up the moving realm of harmonics, I guess. And - I used another EQ on Aux Busses (instrument groups) to refine. And, as mentioned before, I exported the final mix as a wav, reimported it and used the Boost11 plugin which made it sound fuller and louder.
So, yes, everything was done inside Sonar, I'm honest about it!
    Heinz.
