Cakewalk UA=25EX or PreSonus AudioBox USB?

Hi,

Hope you guys can help me decide between these two units...I'd really appreciate your reviews and comments.

Do these units have working Win7 64-bit drivers?

Thanks.

Don't get a presonus. Get the Cakewalk interface. Presonus used a Dice II FW chipset and that can cause problems for windows. Don't roll the dice and take a chance...Pun was intended!!! Get an interface that is proven to work. What better one than one with the recording programs name on it!!!!. Seriously, don't get presonus.

Here is a list of cards I like and the UA 25Ex is on that list:

    viscant,

As CJ implied, far too many users have had nothing but problems with Presonus interfaces...I would avoid them like the plague...

For the record, I love the Presonus external hardware devices such as Eureka (I was impressed enough when I received my first one that I ordered a second one) so I'm not bashing Presonus. They just seem to be problematic in the computer audio interface department at this time.

    Regards,
    Papa

CJ and the others are correct. In my quest to get my Alesis Mastercontrol (DICE II) working, I read more information about DICE II and in particular Presonus than I would ever want to know.

I was fortunate to get my rig working perfectly with Sonar 8.5, but it wasn't easy.

The Cakewalk interfaces are a better choice IMHO.

That's not to say people aren't having success with DICE II devices, mine worked perfectly with Nuendo 4 right from the start but it gave Sonar fits until I installed a different driver, but if you Google a little you will find tons of hits where people are having problems.

For a basic interface it's not worth it IMHO.

    Guys, thanks for your comments.

The UA-25EX is the winning choice....unless anyone has other recommendations within the UA's specs and price range.....

Presonus used a Dice II FW chipset and that can cause problems for windows.

If this is true for the Presonus Audiobox, this would be the first USB interface I've heard of and also the first 2 X 2 interface I've heard of that uses the dreaded DiceII chipset. Anyone have a reference for this?

I owned the UA-25EX for about a year.  I really liked the built in compressor and the overall sound quality seemed good.  No problems functionally.  However, unless something has changed, it's not a full duplex sound card.  You cannot record and  playback simultaneously at 96khz.  I also ran into some issues where the audio format wasn't supported on certain projects, even though I played them back perfectly fine with my ECHO Mia Midi.  I'm assuming this was an issue with the frequency format, but I couldn't get some projects to play back on any setting.  I prefer Echo products at this point.  I own the Echo IOx for laptop recording and the Echo Mia Midi for desktop stuff.  I just wish they'd release a USB external card.

    nighthadfallen,

What are you recording that you feel needs to be at 96k?

I don't feel the need to, but at one point I did.  I then wanted to record additional parts to those projects and was unable to because of this limitation.  It's a limitation of the product which I was unaware of at the time of purchase.

Well, considering that's CJ's home/project studio I'm pretty sure he knows "if they master Electronic Dance music..."...

OT - but I'm considering a VS-20.  It's a guitar/vocal centric Cakewalk interface, 24-bit/44kHz, USB 1.1 (same as the UA-25EX), and can do guitar reamping and will even act as an ACT control surface for Sonar.

Oh - it has Windows 7 64-bit support as well.

I'll probably mate it with a Roland keyboard controller or something else which is "ACT approved".

My needs are minimal for home recording.  I just want to start making music instead of sitting around evaluating things like I have been for over a year

(Actually - I'm very curious about the upcoming Boss BR-800, which can record to up to a 32GB SD Card, but will also work as an audio interface to Sonar - it's got 4 XLR Inputs!!!  There must be some catch - if I find that it is a VS-20 and more, I'll go with that instead )
