Rapture Won't play

Hello,
Bought Rapture, downloaded it and installed. Purchased an AKAI MID keyboard to play it.
Installed keyboard software - keyboard is recognized by my PC (I see it in device manager and keyboard functions can be changed in the software).
Got excited to hear the first sound, but..... nothing. not a beep. I checked the MIDI and Rapture see the device, which is selected. I checked the volume setting on my PC - all working and normal. I checked the Sounds interface in Control Panel - all selected and operational. The Rapture is fully functional with my mouse - i can open/close files and load sounds, etc.
I think I've tried everything.
Any advice would be appreciated before I look for another product.
thanks
Andy

    a few pointers...

you have set up your sound card for your sequencer correctly? (hopefully your not trying to use the onboard.. u might have issues)

you have selected a patch within rapture? it doesn't load any as default.. you have to pick one

you need to enable the akai in your midi options?

"looking for another product" is a bit extreme.. it's probably something you haven't setup correctly

if your new to sonar (assuming thats what you use) , there are tutorials which will make things a LOT clearer .e.g. arming a track etc.

Fog - thanks for the fast response. Much appreciated.
Sorry, perhaps it was a bit extreme - just been trying to get a sound for hours and it is a bit frustrating.

Yes - sound card installed and selected
    Yes - I believe I have a patch selected / program loaded
AKAI (USB Device) is enabled in MIDI options

I ONLY have Rapture installed. I don't have Sonar installed. I understand Rapture to be able to play as stand-alone?

Any further direction would be appreciated.
    thanks

    Some additional notes -

    1. I'm on WinXP, but have a new PC with plenty memory. This also doesn't work on my Notebook.
    2. I loaded other virtual instruments (demo) and can hear them through my speakers.

    thanks

yes with a micro-host.. but even that you need to setup , e .g. what soundcard etc..

you have an asio based card right? and thats chosen it.. it should be a case of selecting the card + midi source.. then a patch.. and hearing playback..

woiuld be easier with a DAW though, which confuses me.. as well 80-90% of people would access it that way

if your using your internal sound card that hasn't got asio etc.. thats more the issue..and probably the root of the problem.

Yea, you need a host.  A DAW or minihost.  A lot of synths have them built in, but not Rapture or DimPro.  I think there was one for some of the other Cake synths.

The full Rapture (not Rapture LE) does indeed have a "microhost" for playing standalone.  It is called "Rapture.exe" and should be found in the main installation folder for Rapture.  My system has two of these, one is in the shared VST plugins folder, the other is in the main Cakewalk Rapture folder--probably one for VSTi and one for DXi.

Rapture LE on my system did not have a separate Rapture.exe program.

Thanks all for your posts and support.
I looked for the ASIO driver (thanks Fog) - found ASIO4All. Loaded it on my notebook and got the dreaded bluescreen... tried a second time and same thing, so uninstalled it. Tried again on my home PC. Loaded it, opened Rapture, opened ASIO, plugged in my AKAI MIDI keyboard and guess what.... a beautiful sound came through my speakers.... yippeeee...!!! at last.
That was my problem - didn't have ASIO loaded...
Any - thanks to all for taking the time to support and provide your comments.
    Very much appreciated.
    Andy.
