Any metal screamers here?
I'd love to have some conversations with fellow screamers. (Please don't mock me too much about "You mean like the hunter on the game Left4Dead?" "The girls on the bleachers?" "Like your angry momma?" Don't make me cry. I'm talking about the vocal style. But 80's metal screaming fans and performers are accepted.

I didn't find modern vocalist a helpful resource or discussion site. I've got no peers there.

I find there are different types of "screamers". When you say 80's Metal Screamers, do you mean - Pantera screaming, or David Coverdale screaming? Both "screamed" in very different ways. I don't do it much anymore, but traditionally I'm more along the David Coverdale, Dio, Queensryche type. If you want heavier....meaner....I'm probably not much help.

You know man...I don't do it much any more due to my taste in music changing over the years. I suppose that as I've aged, my ear has shifted more from the perfection of the 80's production to enjoying something more real....less polished....and certainly more toward the rock/country end of things for the most part. And in the late 80's, I toured with a band for a couple of years. Since I COULD sing all those notes, we did - constantly. And I really burned myself out on it. These days, I tend to keep it a little more laid back...and use the big voice and high notes as more of an occasional weapon, rather than continually. I still listen to a lot of "metal". And I still get invited to work on metal projects as a vocalist once in a while. It's just that on most of my own current music, I don't go that route. As an example of my voice...here's a link to a recent song from a project where I sang all the vocals. This was probably about a year ago. Not too many HIGH screams...but certainly the power-vocal style of the 80's. http://www.skullsessions.com/hook/03-Losing_Your_Mind.mp3 And of course, there was the one I did with fellow Cakewalk user, DavyB, a couple of years ago. This one has a few more high notes in it as I recall...especially toward the breakdown and end of the tune. I know that he's since done something else with the music, so I hope he doesn't mind too much that I post this one as an example..... http://www.skullsessions.com/hook/The_King_Of_The_Broken_Hearted.mp3

There's also the Oi!-screaming which probably is best defined as some sort of I-am-in-a-football(soccer for you over the pond)-firm-and-charging-the-other-firm style of delivery.

Hahaha yeah Oi! Pure angst-ridden, throat painful screaming. The old school DC post-hardcore screaming is also very stressed and stressing at the same time, ofcourse since they were influenced by hardcore punk. I thought that Hatebreed-esque or Terror-esque vocals were in the same ballpark as Oi! and punk, but i figured that it is very controlled when i practiced 'em. (Wow you are from Sweden FTW, have you seen Arch Enemy live, with the old vocalist though? And with the Angela? I'm having a headache so i can't rememeber his name.) Hey Skull, if i may ask, what mic did you use to record the vocals on "Losing Your Mind"?

And Skull, on your high notes, you use your head voice ofcourse? Just to make sure i'm doing it correctly. But i really think that i am obliged to use my headvoice since i sing in really high highs, like hmm. Screaming For Vengeance? I just hope it's really right to use your headvoice. Because for example, Bruce Dickinson hits some of his highs via high chest voice right?

It could have been an AT 4047. I just don't recall for sure. But I'm certain it was run through an Avalon 737. I don't really "like" the whole "chest/head voice" terminology. Everything I sing comes from the diaphram in a big way....so to me it's all "full voice". Without solid diaphram support, nothing works properly. I've never had to go "head" or "false" to hit high notes....I've just been able to hit them with a butt-load of air compression between the diaphram and the vocal chords. Now...of course...I can go falsetto if I want. And I do occasionally, depending on what I'm doing. I'll use more falsetto on background vocals if I feel the full-voice is competing too much with the lead vocal. Or...sometimes...I just WANT to go for the BeeGee's thing and get all falsetto on purpose. In fact....I was just thinking. I have a song that I did a few years ago when I was playing around with falsetto a lot. I'll find that and post it....LOL...some super-high notes on that one. I was sort of my tribute to Barry Gibb!

Yeah...I don't think I've ever heard Dickenson sing in anything but his full-voice. I wouldn't worry too much about what anyone says is right or wrong. If it sounds the way you want it to, and you're not damaging your voice....get 'er done.

@Skullsession I failed bigtime spelling Dickenson. I'm so sorry hahaha. Yeah i figured because you're high have so much power and integrity. I idolize you Skull, hands down. I can't really develop my full highs because i can't shout here on my home studio (sigh), or atleast if i do, i can't afford failing because all my neighbors will hear the awful truth . So i only get the time to do so in an isolated studio. @mgh There! I was thinking about Liby, like the vienna sausage brand (Liby's), so thanks for clearing that up. Tomas is real great too. Umm, what do you think of their latest material though (At The Gates)?

LOL @ "idolize". That's too much dude.....seriously. There are so many great singers out there, I certainly don't deserve that status. But I appreciate your props. The truth is that I kick everyone out of the studio when I'm doing a lot of high range vocals, and I have since day one. Back when we used to pay someone to record our stuff - I would have kicked out the engineer if I could have. I don't like people there hearing all the screw ups. It takes some time to get it right. I'm not one of those "one take" guys that often like some singers are. I go through quite a few takes until I get the ones that I love.... If you're in a situation where you can't fully let it go because of noise levels, you gotta correct that. Holding back always sounds like crap..... David Coverdale once listed his "gear" on an album's liner notes as: "Marlboros, black coffee, and a wing and a prayer." (Or something like that....)

SeveredVesper: No, I have not seen Arch Enemy (don't listen very much to metal but appreciate some of it a lot if it's honest) but will check them out. I've seen a few European Oi!-bands though and standing in the moshpit fighting to aggressive music is always fun. (One fun thing is that there's always been a number of hip-hop people, dubstep junkies and casuals in the Oi!-moshes I've been to here having a go as well as the expected skinheads and punks just for the love of aggro and respectfully punching the next man on the mouth ha ha ha).

Arch Enemy, Amon Amarth, Hipocrisy, Carnage, At The Gates, In Flames, Dark Tranquility and Opeth (I'm sure you've heard of Opeth) are your countries', we may say, national metal groups hahaha! They make sweden popular for their respective style. You guys started the popular "Gothenburg" sound, which serves as the grand daddy of most modern death metal groups. I see you like Oi! and Punk. I have no idea about Swedish Punk acts though. But i am an avid listener of Hardcore punk, Dead Kennedys, Old Anti-Flag, and some maybe more of Oi! like The Exploited and such. So you like Oi! gigs the most?

Yeah, I've heard about Opeth, At The Gates and In Flames (In Flames even had some mainstream popularity here). Well, I'm basically a street guy that mostly listenes to so called Urban music (as long as it's street and not the bubblegum or pranksta bs on MTV) but I really like and listen to a lot of music from and about the rough reality lots of us grow up in no matter the genre. Blues, Jazz, Ska, Punk, Oi!, Metal, Folk, whatever... If it's honest and well performed I will probably appreciate it. When it somes to Oi! I really like The Business, the Opressed, 4skins, Sham 69, Angelic Upstarts, Stiff Little Fingers, Brigada Flores Magon (french), Klasse Kriminale (italian) and Los Fastidios (also italian). I also really like the hardcore/streetpunk band Dropkick Murphys from Boston (being from Boston they really should use Cakewalk ha ha ha) Yeah, Anti Flag and Dead Kennedys are really nice. The Swedish punk scene is ok but not very good, to much teen rebellion from people who later can retire to their safe families and start to work in daddys company. The Oi!-scene have produced some really good bands through the years but never been really big (and sadly the white-power scene has been big at times even if it's pretty non existent today since the left wing groups in Sweden are probably even more aggro than the right wing groups). There's been some of the really good european bands here playing everey now and then though.

"The Swedish punk scene is ok but not very good, to much teen rebellion from people who later can retire to their safe families and start to work in daddys company." That's sad to hear. As long as there is a scene and you're enjoying it, then that should be fine, regardless if it isn't big. Have you started any band or group with punk tendencies?

I was sad to see him pass the other day. But damn...67....what a great ride he had - and he never stopped sounding like DIO. But I also was a huge fan of Dee Snider, Geoff Tate, Tommy Keifer.

Severed: No, unless the rap group I was in could be considered punk... It didn't sound like punk since it was hiphop but except for sound and looks it had all the other charactaristics of punk: workingclass and proud, drunk while doing gigs, violence and moshpits, totally DIY (but with an effort to make it seem professional), rebellious and critical of the high society. I have a good friend who was a skinhead in the 90's working on a project though and I might mix and master it for him which would be really fun.

Yeah, I'm more into Urban music but I got much love and listen a lot to any genre as long as it's honest and real (and I can relate to it). I think it's really cool how there are so many different ways to express, basically the same thing. I mean everything from rap, to soul, dancehall, reggae, blues and further to rock, punk, Oi!, metal still through operah and classical greek literature talk about the same topics. I listen to anything that inspires me or moves me emotionally.

If Michael Amott was raised in Sweden, why is Carcass an English band? carcass were formed in liverpool, the core of the band being jeff walker, bill steer and ken owen. together they released the first album 'reek of putrefaction'. michael amott only joined for the tour after the second album 'symphonies of sickness', and his more melodic style, combined with the love of bill steer for 60s/70s music led them in a more tuneful direction, culminating in 'heartwork' (their 4th album) which was such a huge influence musically on the second wave of Swedeath bands like At the Gates, Dark Tranquility and In Flames. i say second wave, the original Swedish death scene was based around Nihilist (later Entombed), Unleashed, Carnage, Dismember and Grave, these often recorded at sunlight studios and had a similar 'chainsaw' guitar sound. then the more melodic Gothenburg sound took over. An interesting spin-off from this later sound is the melodic black metal sound from bands like Dawn, Sacramentum, Unanimated, Necrophobia and Dissection, a sound which continues to this day with Watain.... certainly per capita Sweden must have the highest number, and highest quality metal bands anywhere in the world, of course there social security system which makes playing in a band economically viable also helps...
