How to instantly alternate playing of two chosen audio tracks?

Dear forum people,

In this informative video linked-to by forum member Jeff Evans:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYTlN6wjcvQ
can be seen how, in some examples, two tracks (or more) are alternated for audition, without interruption, while keeping the time of play running. This means alternating tracks does not reset the playing time to zero, so the complete 'song' is played continuosly, beginning to end, unless stopped, of course.

Is this possible to do, and if so how, in Sonar LE, or other versions?

The times I've tried to do this type of audition-comparisons, I've had to do mute/unmute, or solo/unsolo by mouse click, but that yields discontinuity of audition, making such testings (which can often be subjective) even more difficult.

Or, in case, is there another software that can do that? Or tips? Or tricks?

For me, alternating between two tracks would probably be enough.

Thanks!

Can you just put the two clips in one track and solo on the fly like that? You can't do it when they are on their own tracks.

I am not familiar with LE but this is how I do it in Sonar PE:

Solo the two tracks.  Create a group for the two tracks.  Make it a custom group.  Under the levels, set one from 0 to 99 and the other from 99 to 0.  Now, when you double click one track's volume, it goes to full on and the other track's volume instantly goes to full off.  While the song is playing, simply double clicking one track's volume with effectually solo that track.  Hope this works for you.

    Great idea!

Since SONAR 8 (I think) they introduced 'exclusive solo' which does exactly this. When it's turned on, you can only solo one track at a time so it's easy to switch back and forth between two tracks. Great when comparing to commercial mixes. As for doing it in LE, the grouping with opposite working volumes should be quite achievable. Can't think of any other way myself.

    Here's what I do:

    1) select one of the clips and mute it with the "Q" hotkey.

    2) select both clips that you wish to compare.

    3) leave both clips selected while you are listening to playback.

    4) hit the "Q" hotkey to switch between the two tracks.

    best regards,
    mike

Oh yeah, that's right! I do that when I'm comping without even thinking about it!

I was going to say something similar to Butch. I have used the grouping function as well to A/B tracks..... very effective too for cross fading. And IIRC, you can envelope one of the tracks to automate it.

What I would do would be to solo ONE of the 2 tracks.

Then quick group the 2 tracks

Now you can click either tracks' solo button to switch between on/off and off/on.

You can do the same with mute (and of course any other button)

    Good people,

I first tried using the Q (Mute shortcut) but for some crazy reason, the Q does not work here, even though it is documented to be so in the Help file, and even similar shortcut  keys worked OK.

So I went to Butch's post, but I could not figure it out (my bad), so I went on to study about Grouping Controls (which is the basis for his solution), in the Help File, and thereafter, I did figure a little simpler way, that works great, much as I wanted to, and is easy to setup, as follows:

This is for TWO tracks T1 and T2, but can be extended to more tracks, and other things:

-(No need to select any tracks to start with, nor mute unmute anything)- This was done in Sonar LE.

    1. RightClick on the Mute Button of T1 and GROUP it to group "A"....(Can be other than "A" if needed)

    2. RightClick on the Mute Button of T2 and GROUP it also to group "A"..... (We have now made those two buttons work in a team called 'Group-A', so when one is clicked to do its task, the other will also do its task... Next we make them do opposite tasks).

    3. So, now RightClick again on MuteButton of T1 and choose Group Properties. Choose CUSTOM option...(There you will choose how you want the TWO grouped buttons to behave..Just make sure they are backwards for Track-1 as compared to Track-2, meaning the "1"'s and "0''s are opposite from T1 to T2).

    4. Do exactly the same thing for the Mute Button of T2, choose CUSTOM option also, and make sure that every thing is opposite to the settings of the Mute button for  T1.

So for whatever one does in this sonar project, hitting the Mute buttons of either T1 or T2 will then result in instant opposition.

Thus, to audition (as I wanted), I just need to click on only one of the Mute buttons, instantly alternating them as wished.... Also, since I have the mouse stationary on my choice of either one, I don't need to move the mouse, ...just click on/off is all it takes. Pretty much no distraction.

This setup respects the Solo buttons, volumes, and everything else I can think of, in the project at hand.

(Notice that there is a SWAP button in the Group properties dialog, so it is very convenient reverse things).

I thanks everyone, in particular Butch's way which lead me to learning this very useful thing for me, for this and other uses very likely.

P.S. ..I made it detailed, for I seem to have more time than intelligence and memory, and just in case I later forget how I did it, it'd be safely here in the forum.... But maybe it might help others too.
