I'll be getting the DVD set soon. I hope they will be available in GC or other music outlets.

    Thanks.

The irony in the Alan Parsons story is that he became a superstar engineer as a result of a project he did when he was 23 years old with very little experience and zero formal training. Much of the greatness of the final product was the result of happy accidents and well-rehearsed performances rather than careful sound design and technical craftsmanship.

Which is not to suggest that Parsons is not a top-tier practitioner, he certainly is. The irony is that his prescription for success, made credible by his own success, is to buy a structured training program rather than by actually following his own example.

I see that it's narrated by Billy Bob Thornton. Let's hope he was sober.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

    Agreed.

I pre-odered and therefore have downloaded and watched all the chapters posted on the website. All very well done. Ultimately they lead up to mixing a new song where various pieces of the song have been used in examples in the various chapters. When it came to the mix portion, there was no 'secret magic' technique that was presented. Just well rounded observations and advice from Alan's experience. For the song, Alan started with top-notch musicians and excellent recorded tracks. The mix was like the 'icing-on-the-cake'. He was not trying, nor did he have to, band-aid anything during the mix to make it sound good. Having properly recorded tracks as the basis sure helps making a mixer's life go easier. Everything just falls into place.

As a sidenote, some may feel these videos to be a bit light in content. I think it is safe to say that they are excellent for the novice getting into recording. After that it becomes a bit gray regarding how people may feel about the content. There's always little tidbits offered which are informative, and always something new to be learned. But many may be at an experience level where the money can be better spent for other things in their studios. I feel there is only so much that can be taught. The rest must come from doing and experimenting. This set of instructional DVD's will get people on the right track should they need some guidance. And as I stated prior, they are very well done.
