Obsessive Thoughts (Alternative)

So, I had an afternoon with nothing shaking and boredom was setting in.  In desperation, I started watching TV and came across a show called “Monk”.  The character Monk was an interesting sort --- you might say a bit obsessive (have you seen it?).  Right near the TV I noticed that my wife had placed a little figurine that she had gotten as a gift --- it was a goofy looking lady holding a sign that said “obsessive thoughts, obsessive thoughts, obsessive thoughts”.  Well after an extended period of my own obsessing on these coincidences, and after way too much coffee, I got rather silly.  This little number is the result of that silliness.

This is just a dumb little song in which I probably broke a lot of the rules of good musicality (being ignorant on the subject I wouldn’t know).  Oh ya, that interesting bass run in the intro is not me but a loop that I found on the internet ages ago.  I hope that you get a giggle out of this little ditty.

I like your use of dissonance.  It has a lot of texture which I like, and your spoken lyrics are just right for the song.  However, I don't think Mr. Monk would have cared for this as he was way too O/C for something this alternative (in spite of living in San Fransisco).  All in all, well done.

    Hi Freddy,

I'm pretty O/C myself so I can relate!

I liked the tune, the spoken delivery and yea...I did get a giggle out of it

That was interesting. Sounded a bit like a cross between the B-52s and Frank Zappa. But then, everything sounds like that to me. It's a blessing.... and a curse. Good job.

This is very different from you Freddy.

I get a bit of a Zappa vibe from this too.

Really interesting track with some great sounds.

I'd love to hear you do more stuff like this.

    Nice one.

Hi Herb.  You're right --- 1234, I IV V, 4/4, 6/8  ---- aaaahhh it won't stop.  Thanks for listening and for your comments!

Rick:  You're right also.  I've taken a different path (on this one) and I think I got lost.  Now I just have to find the road back to the Blues.  I'm glad that you got your giggle from this one.

Thank you James.  This style is new territory for me but every once in a while you gotta try something a little different.

Thanks for the listen and your input Lynn.  I was hoping to create an edge on this song and hopefully the dissonance and breaking some rules helped with this task.  Ya, I don't think Mr. Monk would find this soothing.

Hi Gary!  I think we all have a touch of the obsessiveness.  Thanks for the comments and I'm glad that you also got your giggle.

Robby:  I surprised me with this.  I guess that is what too much coffee and the wee hours of the morning can do to you.

Thank you Terry.  I went back and listened and yup it could be brought up front in the intro a bit more.  Thanks again.

Chapel:  The B-52s and Frank Zappa -- I like them both.  Thank you.

Thanks a million Blipp.  I appreciate  your kind comments.  Some night I will stay up very late and drink too much coffee with the goal of seeing if I can do something similar.

Freddy you threw me off balance with the opening bass track that was cool , after that you did a spin number on my head wondering hey whats up here !

I have to say it did have an after effect on me leaving thoughts in my head with hey this sounds cool but for me when that cool bass disappeared I was thinking hey where's that BASS !
Cool song , Vocals I think were cool but not out front enough for me .

    Cheers!

This was a fun listen..a bit different for you as I thought you were obsessed with the blues & 50's..

A trippy kinda New Wave sorta tune and textures in this. Lyrics are good, vox a little buried, but works well.

You surprised me with this one in a good way!!

Thanks for listening and your comments James.  I found that bass loop on-line quite a while ago.  I love it and tried to use in for the entire song but I thought it tended to overpower the rest of the song.  However, this might have been an artifact of my inability -- I found this a very hard song for me to get the balance on this song right. Thanks again.

Larry: I don't know what happened to me with this one but you know, every once in a while you have to travel a different path, take a different direction, do something different direction, etc.  If you don't well then you just --- well --- obsess on it.  I am glad that you liked this.  Thanks for your listen and kind comments.

Shades of Captain Beefheart! Fun tune. But Essie May is more up my alley, some tasty blues. Love that rhythm guitar that you sustain with some trem. I would EQ the guitars a little brighter, but I like the way the parts work together. Vocal is right up front on my monitors. Great understated guitar solo too. I love it.

How does one critique something experimental and intentionally 'out there'?  Hmmm ... a question for another day, I suppose.

Certainly different.  I liked the FX on the vox, they worked, as did the dissonant chords.  Could it do with more depth to the synth backings and some more evolution of the rhythym?  Not an ideal listening environment here, but I rekcon that piece would suit some sort of awesome psychoacoustic thing with L/R trickery and the like.

But, as  a boredom-breaker, it worked.  Well done.

Terrific -- that early, new wave feel was what I was going for.  Thanks for listening and for the kind comments.  I'm glad that you liked it John.

Hey Mark.  I am glad that you got a giggle out of this number.  It was a silly little thing meant to bring on a smile maybe even a chuckle.  However, I am especially pleased that you liked Essie May.  Blues will always be my favourite.  Thanks for taking time to listen to both and thanks for your valued input.

Thank you Philip.  I really appreciate your comments.  I understand that Dr. Demento is no longer on the airwaves but only can be found on-line.  I am going to have to google his site.  He has lots of fun, silly songs too.

Thanks Daniel.  I appreciate your comments and particularly like your suggestion about the "L/R trickery".  I'm gonna have to try it out.  Thanks again.

Very interesting tune, Freddy.  I really like what you did with the various synth textures layering in and creating a backdrop ideally suited to the subject matter.

Yeah, I've seen Monk, but if you want to see the real deal and dig deeper on OCD, check out: http://www.vh1.com/shows/the_ocd_project/series.jhtml   Pretty wild stuff!

More, more... I've been wanting to do something on the subject myself, but... so many ideas and so little time.  I envy you for having just jumped in and doing what you felt.

bass guitar intro was great. I almost thought someone turned on the TV with Seinfelt in the next room :D

Nice textures, but after a while they come out a bit monotone, -in the wrong way :D

You should add a triphop drum track to this, then I it would be just great .D

Hi JC!!  Yup, it's me  --- I think (although I'm not always sure).  You know sometimes you just gotta do something different.  Like John Lee Hooker said "Let the boy boogie woogie, it's in him and its gotta come out".  I had some kind of fun doing this one.  Thanks for taking the time to listen and for the kind comments and encouragement!
