new PC on deck
Well I am going to upgrade to a new PC. The old Athlon ain't cutting it. Can only playback a few tracks and any effects cause stutter and the jamstix requires a bigger processor anyway. Got all the parts but a firewire card. Gigabyte G41M-ES2L 2 gigs of MoBo compatible memory SATA Hard Drive SATA DVD/RW Core 2 Quad 2.4G Q8300 600W PSU Graphics card with 1 Gig Mem Windows 7 64 Bit MC4 won't work with this new setup so I was thinking Sonar but which version would be recommended? Also looking forward to a real copy of Jamstix. Tried out the demo on the old system and really like it.

What are you using for a sound card? Sorry, I missed the Focusrite Saffire. How many Inputs will you be recording at once ? I believe MC5 will probably do you fine unless you are looking to record more than two inputs at a time. I think that is one of the main differences with MC5 and Sonar Home Studio besides the price.

MC 4 should work with that system, if you run it in 32-bit compatibility mode. But, to answer your question about SONAR, SONAR Home Studio 7 is the first program on the climb up the Cakewalk ladder that is 64-bit compatible. You need to check if your other hardware and software is 64-bit, too, like the Saffire. I remember looking at that on the Focusrite web site a few weeks ago; but I was looking for Win 7, not necessarily for 64-bit. I emailed another user here last night asking a similar question. She has the same program I have (SHS6XL) running on a Win 7 64-bit OS. My XP computer is appoaching 4 years old, and wondering if a possible computer change would force me to upgrade the program. She wrote that it works fine on 7-64, but that she runs it in 32-bit compatibility mode so that all her other hardware and software works with it. Lots of things to consider...

make sure the focusrite has 64bit drivers or you'll be hosed.

Beagle make sure the focusrite has 64bit drivers or you'll be hosed. Eeks! I may indeed be hosed. I suppose I could run the new PC on a Hard Drive with Windows XP but I really wanted a serious OS upgrade. Went to the Saffire site and they had this IMPORTANT: Windows 7 users should note that legacy firewire drivers should be installed BEFORE connecting and installing ANY Saffire devices on their system. Please visit the answerbase for details on how to do this. NOTE: Once you have installed the Saffire software and drivers, you will also need to run the firmware update. The firmware updater can be found in Program FilesSaffire on Windows or in /Applications/Saffire on Mac OS. That looks to me like it will be "Doable" but I guess I'll have to try it and see. But yeah I hadn't really considered the Saffire in the equation. So thanks for bringing that to my attention Beagle. Tap, I was hoping to try a different software so I wouldn't have to deal with a patch. Not a deal breaker but I'm just funny that way now in my old age. Gregy I can't say for sure but I have the home version of 7 and I don't "think" that it has 32 bit compat mode that might be in Professional tho I could be wrong about that. But thanks will keep it in mind and look further. The older I get, the more simpler I need things to be.

what patch are you talking about? It's my understanding that MC5 needs a patch to work with Win7 64 bits. Was I wrong?

I don't remember what the patch covers, but yes, you need a patch. it's pretty painless to update, tho, especially compared to updating the saffire like you described above!
