can you link a desktop and laptop for more processing power??

i remember reading an electronic musician article awhile back about linking computers thru ethernet i believe..
maybe this was only with mac..

but.. can you use a laptop to help with processing or running soft synths under windows 7??

i know you can run soft synths on a laptop and record them into the desktop thru the audio in...
is there a way to use the laptops cpu to lighten the desktop's load??

    The short answer is "yes"...
But it's often more trouble than its worth...
    (Higher latency, etc)
