BFD2 and Vdrum in Creator 5

Dear All,
I'm new on computer music. My aim is to run my VDrums live, at pro level, using BFD2. Can I use Music Creator 5 to support it as I already have this programme and don't wish to get anything more expensive just yet, such as Cubase.

I'm also having troubles connecting VDrums to Music Creator 5.  I can't get it record at all and recognise the different drums. For someone that is really new at this can you treat me like an idiot and keep it simple.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Matt

Tell us a little about your set up.... connections and stuff...and most important...what sound card are you using?

The answer is yes, you can do that with MC5 if you have the right equipment and sound card to support it...... the same would be required in any other DAW as well.

MC5 would most likely be fine and once you learn it the logical upgrade would be Sonar rather than Cubase since this is the forum for the maker of Sonar, and since it is very similar in make up to it's little brother MC5

Which V-Drum kit do you have?
How is it connected to your computer? Standard MIDI cables or USB?
In MC under Options>MIDI Devices, what do you have selected as your MIDI device? It should be whatever you have the Roland connected to.
Without knowing anything about the V-Drums, I believe if you want each drum to be recorded on a different MIDI track, you need to set up each drum to send on a particular MIDI channel (which must be set in the V-Drum box, not in MC), and set each MIDI track in MC to record on those same channels. That is, kick transmitting on ch 1, MC set up so it records that channel; snare transmits on ch 2, MC set to record ch 2. etc.
Also, what is your sound card or audio interface?
With most stock computer sound cards, you won't be able to use a soft synth such as BFD effectively in real time due to the latency you'll experience. Especially for a drummer, that delay will be maddeningly frustrating.

    Greg and all,
Once I get BFD2 delivered tomorrow I'm going to try and run it on my laptop to use on gigs. I fear that the sound card will not be up to it though. What kind of sound card should I be using?
VDrums (TD8) use general MIDI and I have a Tascam US-122 interface with USB into computer.

    Yours, getting confused

The interface you have looks like it will do a fine job for you. Tascam US-122

Right. Early on, the US-122 had some problems. We heard about them here with some folks not getting satisfactory results. Is yours working with MC?
If it is, and you've got the latest drivers for it, and have your laptop running smoothly and efficiently with all unnecessary programs off, no virus scanners or scheduled tasks, you should be able to get the latency effectively to 0, and use it live in concert.

Personally i would not use an USB card live in a show. I would mix the music down to wave file of midi and softsynth and use the built in card. Why add another degree of failure to the mix. The built in card is fine for basic playback, it will play ad CD quality.

Alot of this depends on the process you use. How do you use MC live? It looks like you are using midi output to drive the drum machine. That will work, but if you have a laptop you need a midi connection like the Tascam, or something similar. Why not record the output of the VDrum back to a audio track and process it and let it play out of the audio line out to the PA or amp? A lot of ways to skin this cat! If VDrums is feeding MC5 and that is playing out thru BFD2 you could have some latency, so the Tascam would be a good summing place. Or as I said bounce the drum track to audio and go from that.

I think he wants to play the V-drums live but use the sounds of BFD in real time.
