Need Help with hardware routing

Hi - I tried this on the Hardware forum - no response - thought I would try here. I need help as a first timer in using a 1/2 rack model  compressor; which is an old Boss RCL-10. I don't know what routing configuration to use to get it properly in the path. Other hardware is a PV8 mixer and my interface. I am not sure in what sequence to run my cables. Hope someone can help or send me to a link that might have some visuals to go by.

Thanks

Don't know the PV8.  But the usual way is:

going in from the mic<preamp<comp via inserts if you have them.  If not you need to take an output - line out or bus.  Run the cable from there to the comp to the interface input.

If you are using after tracking just use the line out from the interface into the comp into a line input on the mixer and take that back into the interface.

    Simple enough?

If you want it on the final track for mixing then,

    computer output>preamp>compressor>speakers

I would think the compressor would be the last in line before the DAW..... however...... I don't like that setup.... I can see using that config on a live setup... as in a PA system where the compressed signal goes to the amps.... that can prevent damage to speakers  from  spikes.

But in a DAW.... why do you want to compress the signal going in?  There are compressors in the "box" that I think would allow you to compress the signal only if you really needed to do so.  To compress everything across the board, I think would be to unnecessarily remove the dynamics from every signal going in,,,depending on the compressor setting of course.

However.... I do like to watch the pretty flashing lights as the compressor works....and I miss that with the compressor in the box.

    Just my 2 centavos.

I use a comp/limiter going in a lot of times.  But it is a high end unit and I like the way stuff sounds through it.  The main reason.  But I don't usually squash things going in - just a little evening so I have less to do in the box or on the way out.  Plus, I only have a few bits of analog here at home so use 'em when I can.
