Using the same VST twice in a project

In HS6 I've inserted Steinberg's "Virtual Guitarist" into a project as a VST track. That works fine. I then wanted to add the same VST into the same track to have two instances of it playing on different  tracks.

The Window opens OK, and I see all the usual parameters, but the guitar option window is blank - i.e. there are no guitar file sounds to load.

Is it possible to have two instances of the same VST running simultaneously?

Also, having saved the project and reloaded it, I am unable to change the selected guitar voice in the first instance,  it will only play the guitar voice I saved.

Any ideas on what I might have done wrong or how to correct it anyone?

I'm not familiar with Steinberg's Virtual Guitarist, but I don't think what you're trying to do is going to work.

what you need to do instead is open the VST not "in the same track" but into a different track.  are you inserting it into the FX bin?  if so, I'm not very experienced at doing it that way.  I insert my VSTis by using the INSERT>SOFTSYNTH menu.  if you do it that way, it puts the VSTi in the synth rack, and you can choose for it to create you a new MIDI track with each instance of the synth if you want (which you do).

if you want the same MIDI data to play BOTH instances of the VSTi's then you need to clone the MIDI track and send the outputs to the 2 different VST tracks.

Beagle is right. Load your softsynths into the synth rack and then point the tracks to the softsynth. Each track can only use one softsynth at a time.

    Hi Beagle and Dave..

I am actually doing as Beagle suggests..using INSERT>SOFTSYNTH menu. And I get another set of Virtual Guitar synth parameters, and another midi and audio track set to go with them, but the second insert doesn't have any sound files to select.

I'm assuming that the "second" insert will have used a different midi channel?

    Just to clarify..

I'm not trying to add a second instance to the same track...I'm adding a separate track for the second instance.

but the second insert doesn't have any sound files to select.

are you saying that the 2nd insert of virtual guitar won't let you load instruemnt library sounds?  if so that sounds like a steinberg problem, not sonar.

I'm assuming that the "second" insert will have used a different midi channel?
no, I'm assuming that this VSTi is one channel only.  the 2nd insert will be a different VIRTUAL OUTPUT.  they'll be labelled differently; similar to this:
    Steinberg Virtual Guitar 1
    Steinberg Virtual Guitar 2

that's the way they'll look in the synth rack and that's the outputs you need to have for each MIDI track.

IF you can load sound libraries into the synth.

Some VSTis only let you have one instance. You need to refer to Virtual Guitarist's doccumentation.

Hi Guys...well two things I have now learned!

First you CAN have more than one instance of Virtual Guitarist, and second, as Beagle says, the synth rack shows instance 1 and instance 2 separately in the synth rack view.

The most bizarre part is that having loaded the project today (after leaving it for a week) , both instances are now running and with independent library sounds. So don't know what has changed, but it seems to have sorted itself out!

Thanks to all for the support.
