Midi Controller. My old Roland R-5 vs Akai MPK49

Random question/wondering aloud thought....

I did a project recently using Addictive Drums that were triggered through an AKAI MPK49 and then I did another project where I used the Roland R-5 (a circa 1998ish 16 pad drum machine) to trigger the sounds. And I SWEAR I hear a difference between the two using all the same variables sans the controller.

Can this be?

My thought is not all the MIDI dynamic parameters are on within the R-5 (though I did read the old manual and map the pads to the right sounds) - or there simply weren't as many on that R-5 as the AKAI.

AM I MAD?

I still have an R8 which was the bigger brother to the R5.

The simple answer is - yes.   There is a difference between almost any two controllers (if they are different controllers).

The main reason is the velocity curves.   So, depending on the velocity sensitivity of the receiving device/plugin, each controller will be sending it a slightly different velocity curve resulting in slightly difference dynamics.

    You're not mad.  You're observant ;)

Not necessarily ...  the R5 does have various velocity curve settings, if I remember correctly.   And you can also adjust velocity for an entire track by "percentage" if it's just a matter of degree, so to speak.

I will scour the manual and play around. It was fun just to get it mapped to the soft synth correctly.

So far, I still can't get the R-5 to sound as good as my Motif 8, and not even close to the Akai.

You might try recording the same pattern played to a click on both controllers to two different tracks, slide one track a 16th or so late, then combine them in one track and look at the velocities in the controllers pane in the PRV and see how they compare. That might give you a better idea what you need to do to make them respond more similarly to what you feel are comparable physical performance dynamics.

Anyone want to buy a Motif 8 and R-5 drum module?

    ba_midi and brundlefly,

Have either of you ever tried MIDI-OX or VelocityCurveSM? I am still trying to figure out this midi stuff (guitar player/songwriter by trade). I am going to experiment with the track offset suggestion tomorrow.

I've only used MIDI-OX in passing as a MIDI monitor for troubleshooting. Not familiar with VelocityCurveSM at all. You're on your own.
