Vst instruments will open under 'Insert' 'Soft Synth'

Edit (again): Seems to be some relevant info at the bottom from Shambler

Motif XS Rack is a hardware synth, right? In that case, you don't insert it as a VSTi; you import an instrument definition for it under Options > Instruments, and assign channels to it. Then you assign the output of a MIDI track to that instrument, and the Input of an audio track to receive the audio output of the rack module.

BigJoe, I hope you don't mind me asking this problem I've been having with setting up some of my VST plugins?

I'm testing out some free Soft Synths as well as some Demo's from the KVR forum and I have quite a few in my Cakewalk>VST folder. When I manually scan my VST's in Sonar, the following takes place:

    1) During the scan, the scanner stops at a certain file (can't remeber which one, but I think it was a freebie) as if it's completed the scan (usually after about 1/3 of the scan).
So I took that .DLL file out (at the point where it stopped) from Program Files>Cakewalk>VST Plugins Folder and re-scanned, then it would stop at a different .DLL file (sometimes a Cakewalk plugin and at other times a free one).
I kept taking out the ones it gets stuck at and re-scanned.
I moved about 7-10 files out of my VST folder and then the scanner does completely finish,  but I can't imagine all of them could be corrupted (especially the Cakewalk files or even the Demo ones like ACE)??

Is there something else I can do to fix this so I can test out some these Demo's?

I personally wouldn't mix them in with the Cake ones. And you're better off scanning after each install of a plug-in rather than in a big bunch. Plus you can just scan the folder they are in. It sounds like something is making it hang. Most .dlls can be moved after the event and re-scanned in their new position. There are a few that can't but not usually the free type. I'd house your free and demos in their own folder to start.

Even so it does sound unusual that it's hanging on lots of them.

Good point Handsome!! I'll make a new folder for the free ones & re-scan.
    Thanks!!

    Ps.
Did you buy that Waves bundle at Amazon?

Have you tried a reboot and fresh scan? Your PC or Sonar could just be having a moment. To be honest, I've never had it do it on more than one although I have had the odd one hang.

No, I haven't rebooted. I'll do both those suggestions once I get home.

Is that Waves bundle actually (pounds) 10,000,000 = $15,234,285.13?
I thought Amazon made a typo....for that price, I could get a...uhm...a LOT of gumballs!!

Yeah, it's just an error. If you've got 'buy in one click' turned on then it's best to avoid that page.

I'm sure others will have had stuff hang before so it'll probably be solvable.
Isolation is the best bet until someone offers a solution. At least you may be able to narrow it down to something.

Your motif XS rack is not a VST! It is not software but HARDWARE!  Brundlefly is correct in telling you how to set it up.

Sorry guys you are misleading bigjoe.

The Motif Rack and Keyboard can be used as a vst but only in Cubase since only Cubase supports VST3.

BigJoe, you will have to use the other option as I do and that is Motif XS Editor and Studio Manager.

You will still be able to access your Motif in a similar way to the VST but it won't be integrated in your DAW.

Sonar does not support VST3 as of yet but you aren't missing out on much, just remember to save your setup in XSEditor for each project.

    You will need this

MOTIF XS Editor V1.3.0 for Windows

    and this

    Studio Manager V2.3.1 for Windows 7/Vista/XP 32bit

    Quote from Yamaha...

MOTIF XS Editor VST V1.4.0 for Windows 7 / Vista / XP 32bit
The MOTIF XS Editor VST, based on the “VST3 technology” by Steinberg, works as a VST3 plug-in with Cubase series 4.5 or later (DAW application). The MOTIF XS Editor VST also works as the same way as other VST instrument software, allowing you to save the edited settings of the MOTIF XS, or use them for another project.

In addition, you can handle the MOTIF XS Voices in the Media Bay window in Cubase when using the MOTIF XS Editor VST with Cubase 4.5 or later, allowing you to search for, listen, and play the MOTIF XS Voices within Media Bay in Cubase. The MOTIF XS Editor VST provides a comprehensive and seamless music production environment - making the use of hardware and software both easier and much more efficient.

Interesting. Welcome to the forum, and thanks for clearing that up.

No need to apologize for pointing out our incompetence, though.  We did the best we could with the meager information provided. If he had said "I can't get the Motif XS Editor VST plug-in to show up in SONAR, he would have gotten a better answer sooner. In fact, if he had even bothered to come back and reply to the wrong answers, we probably would have gotten there in short order.

    Thanks for the welcome

It is often difficult to give advice when you haven't had specific experience of the same problem yourself.

Luckily I had looked into this issue recently when I was deciding whether to switch from Cubase 4 to Sonar.
