'72 Champ, Telecaster tone test (kind of) D&B ADDED 7/24

It's going to be awhile before I get this done, but the rough mix of just the guitar sounded pretty cool to me, and just wanted to get some thoughts.

The long chords at the end have the amp noise in there on purpose. I mic'd those in stereo and I'm trying to capture (unsucessfully so far) me holding the guitar in front of the amp. I can hear the slight phasing on it, just can get a "shadow" behind it yet to sharpen it up.

That's a sweet creamy tone.  Really nice tune.  Hope you finish it and post again.

What kind of wah is being used at 2:25?

It's a Dunlop crybaby GCB95, I modded it with the gain mod and vocal mod. Both the mods can be found on-line. The signal chain for the guitar is Telecaster into the champ, a wah in a fixed position for a few tracks, and the wah being used expressively. I did use a modded DS1 for the last power chords. There will be a droning bass going during the last part.

I mic'd it with an AT4050, and an SM57. I played around with mic placement and phasing depending on the tone of the track.

At the very beginning it had a real Joe Walsh, Hotel California opening type of vibe. But anyway, plenty of good tones here.

Ron,  I love the quirkiness of this one.  I really dig all the cool tones and riffs.  The way you create a percussion like drive with the guitar riffs really appeals to me too.  Fun stuff, stands pretty well just like it is but I am sure you'll do it up into something even cooler.  Good luck!

    Ron,

    Killer tones and parts!

Don't know where you're going with it (or if you're going anywhere )

but, even tho it sounds great 'as is', I'd love to hear it with drums, bass, etc...

Very nice tones indeed! I want them! I can taste them! Yeah! The opening guitar reminds me of "Life In The Fast Lane" by the Eagles.

Good tone, but then you have work at making a Tele sound bad

mic'ing an amp is the only way to go.  (Unless your James then you can get pretty darn good tone with DI)

    Cool tune...

    My opinion on the recording:
The guitar is a bit thin... like 200-600Hz is almost non-existant.. I'm sure you can see this if you put a visual frequency analyzer in line... might not matter if you add a bass and kit though. It all depends on what you want to do.

"mic'ing an amp is the only way to go.  (Unless your James then you can get pretty darn good tone with DI)"

I like to go Direct and Mic the amp and get a nice mix of both going... less amp noise on the DI for pushing leads or volume and a nice warm amp tone to fill in the missing pieces.

Thanks for sharing! Keep pump-in em out!

Yeah, I'm hearing it more clearly since I put the bass in there. I haven't uploaded the changes yet, want to get the drums done first...they are about 40% there at this point. I tend to put a hole in the 200-600Hz region, but usually fix it well-enough in the final mix.

What turned out great were the bongos I ended up with. I put a condenser perpendicular to the skins, and a '57 towards the bottom. Best sound I've gotten so far. Can't wait to upload them, but I need to get the drums done to tie it together before I upload it.

The droning guitar in the backround at the end is getting redone. Not happy with how it turned out (tonally and timing). I'm going to do a different mic'ing technique for it. However I did figure out how to get the effect of me holding the guitar in front of the amp, so I'll share. I panned the mics hard left and right, then recorded an entire track of just my amp's idling noise at full tilt. Flipped the phase on the track, then ran it to it's own bus. I fine tuned the phase with the sonitus phase tool, then used the surround plug, and created a figure 8 pattern, with a slow follow. It creates a dead "shadow" that drifts between the panned guitars...actually a pretty cool effect!

Just uploaded it with drums and bass...bass is done, but drums aren't. Drums are close, just a few sections have a basic beat I have to play with.

Man this sounds really sweet, Ron! Yeah you get some incredible tones here. Just gotta love it! I think it's time to spend some time with a Tele. I've worked with many different Fenders but yet to really explore the Tele. I never owned a Fender amp, but that champ really sings. My Brother has a number of sweet amplifiers and one of his fav's is an old Bassman.

I really enjoyed your work here!

    Hey Ron,

    Sounds fantastic from here!!!

I love what the bass and drums bring to your guitar arrangement.

    Really nice!

Thanks, I got the bulk of the tracks done now. I'm starting the vocals tonight. There's really only like 2 verses, but it's wordy-machine gun type of vox. I really want to do it right, so I'll probably take a few days on it.

I hit on a "Floyd-like" sound at the end when the strings come in, I didn't upload it yet. I'll probably start a different thread when it's done.
