Same thing, new packaging...probably Echo's leftovers.

That said, it's a useable and decent sounding unit if you can get past the awful support and drivers.

I responded more in-length over at Gearslutz, but overall I'm happy with my Onyx satellite...but I was fortunate to get 3rd party drivers for it while they were still available. The amount of tracks I can run at low latencies still amazes me, but this isn't anything attributed to Mackie!

I'm stuck in the past, but my foot's tapping forward

Yes, the hardware had issues and the driver support was worse then laughable. No one who owned one of the other ones they used to sell would buy one so I guess they are looking for a new generation of suckers.

you'd think they wouldn't let their name get tarnished.  they should have farmed out the stuff they couldn't do in-house well, like drivers and A/D conversion.  the rest of it should have been a piece of cake for them.

Yeah, I was one of the suckers who bought the Onyx 400f... I tried the 3rd party drivers that Ron mentioned, but they wouldn't work on my system.  (They refunded my money, thankfully.)

I'm really glad I was able to sell it to a Mac user, and I hope he had better results with it.  I ended up with an RME FireFace 400F and I couldn't be happier with the performance and stability.  I will never buy anything Mackie makes again.

They call 'em fingers, but I've never seen 'em fing.

They tried both and failed. They tried in-house then let someone else do it, then brought it back in house.  They just can't seem to keep focused. It also takes a huge commitment and years of work to become one of the known good brands and I don't think they have the resources or time to do that now... it's just too late.  They would never sell enough interfaces to keep that kind of development staff.

Audio interfaces live a die by driver support and even if you make the coolest hardware in the world it won't help. The best idea they ever had was making the computer interface separate from the mixer so it could be replaced. But to date there hasn't been an upgrade or second generation of those cards. Can you imagine a USB3 card for the Onyx mixers with Lynx converters ? or your choice of lower cost converters.  It's a cool thought but it's one of those things that just won't ever happen.

Mackie has some good stuff, the studio monitors are a good example but they have many more misses then hits. That company will go down in history as having a chance to have it all and blew it.

you couldn't be more right there.  that's why I'll never buy a Tascam soundcard.  their drivers might be better now with the newer soundcards they have out - but I remember the old ones and how crappy the drivers were.

It hardly matters, they can't even get firewire right. Unless USB3 is way easier they will not be able to figure it out.

So I guess this is what they were hyping a couple of years ago with their "don't be afraid of the dark/Mackie Black" promotion.  They had a website for it where you could register to win if you guessed correctly what it was; they also asked what you hoped it would be.  They must have gotten a wish list they didn't like and shelved the whole thing for a while.

My Onyx 1640 still works great. Gets used all the time.  I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.  I've been useing it with two versions of sonar with the same driver off mackie's web site that I downloaded when I bought it.   :)   I like my Onyx mixer enough to buy another one.   I have a Alesis HD24 so I'm thinking about getting a 24channel Onyx  to use with my HD24.   Do you guys think the Onyx mixer in it's self is crap ?  I can get a killer price on a new one right now.

Wow. I never heard of the 3rd party drivers that you say were available for the Satellite. I also have the Satelite, but I gave up on using it as a audio interface because the drivers just didn't help the unit operate good enough for me.

Man I would be very grateful if you could send me the 3rd party driver package you are referring to. My email is thomasabarnes(at)yahoo(dot)com.:)

Unfortinately it wouldn't work for you. CEntrance made a custom driver based on the user's sytem, and can only be registered on that system.

I guess they stopped making the universal driver, but maybe you can get lucky if you ask them really nice.

Also, the base station on the satellite is useless. It works fine out of the base...and the unit's self-noise gets quieter at higher sampling rates. Mine has be great for what I need it for, but getting it there was a struggle.

Just have to add that I love my 1200f and my 800r. The 1200f was a highly underrated piece of gear. Just installed the 64 bit drivers for my new machine - look forward to testing (and keeping my fingers crossed).

I have a 1640 Onyx fire wire board as well, and it works great with Sonar and will Logic on the Mac platform. In fact I am in the process of listing it for sale and upgrading to the new Onyx-i series, to get some of the new features.

Hi - I'm running an Onyx 400f w/ Windows 7 64 bit - using the 64 bit Vista driver.  Are you running WIn7 by chance?  If so - having any issues?  My unit was working fine, but now that I've upgraded From Vista 32 bit to Win7 64 bit , it's been locking up occassionally.  Of course Mackie seems to have dropped responding to driver queries on this unit, so am curious if anybody else is having issues.

Are you sure it's an issue with your Onyx? I had problems with Windows 7 x64 just locking up, very random and assumed it was either Sonar or drivers for my ZEDR-16. After lot of web searching, trial and error I've finally got it down to my network card or rather it's driver. IF I disable it, no lock ups at all. May be worth a try for you too.
