The Pillars Of The Earth

One of my favorite novels of all time, Ken Follett's "The Pillars Of The Earth" has been made into a TV mini-series. I saw an ad for it the other day and recorded the first episode.
It was okay, but moved along too fast, losing the depth and vast scope of the novel.
Turns out that DirecTV is only showing the first 2 episodes. If I want to watch the whole series, I'll have to get Starz, which I just cancelled a few months ago because I don't watch many movies nowadays.
Maybe I'll get the DVD when it comes out.

I always enjoy the books better..... there is much more detail in the book version of a story.

Given both... I prefer to read the book first...then see the movie.

I read it and the follow up too. Read them back to back starting in November of last year. Great story.

Craig - fictionalized town in ~12-14th (spans both books) century England centered around the building of a church.

I haven't read the book. Give us breif detail.

    The paperback is 973 pages.
    Nothing brief about that!
Takes place from 1123 through 1174 AD.
Chronicles the lives of Tom Builder and his family, Jack Jackson, his mother Ellen the witch, Prior Phillip.
    The Church versus the Noblemen.
    Good against evil.
    Love versus hate.
The concept that The Law applies to everyone, not just the peasants.
    Treachery at every turn.
    Moral and ethical dilemmas abound.
Darkest evil, disguised in the robes of authority, manipulating people as if they were pieces on a chess board, for his own gain, not for the glory of God.
The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse riding roughshod across England, laying asunder good men to enrich the coffers of the wealthy. Sound familiar?

Not a book I thought I would like, but once I started it I could not put it down.

Has to be a very good church building story to keep a crusty old atheist reading if for 900+ pages.

really a very good book...I had not ever read a story like it.

    Is it fiction?

Yes, but historical fiction. Lots of the events in the book actually took place.
Follett puts many of his characters in those historical moments.

I'm just goofing with you. :-)

    I like the non-fiction.

e.g. I was reading a book about Fender Amps today and it was quoting an interview with Paul Rivera and he spoke about being involved in an attempt to buy out Fender in 1984. His management team lost out on that bid... the other managers won out. Mr Revera's team was backed by the Bass Brothers.

Now that wouldn't mean much to me except that two books ago I read a history of Texas Oil fortunes... so the Bass Brothers were familiar to me as being the owners of one of the big four Texas oil fortunes.

Non fiction... it seems more entertaining than fiction. :-)

My wife-to-be is really excited about this series.
She keeps telling me to read the book, but usually if I've read the book first I hate the TV version.  I want to watch it this, i haven't met anyone who read the books and didn't become a fan.

From the first 2 episodes I saw (can't get the rest unless I subscribe to Starz), the book will fill in a lot of detail that was left out of the series.
