The Blues vs Jazz

Why is it that if I'm in a Fosse mood, I listen to the blues?

Do I have some wires crossed?

Mike?

    Hi,

Not the wires ... just the notes!

It's one reason why I like to say I listen to music ... not jazz, or blues!

And if you have never seen "All That Jazz" ... it's a pretty good movie!

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

Totally agree on the movie... Fosse directed it...  and choreographed it... no wonder it was good.. the dude had a vision and made it come real...

As fr the Blues vs. Jazz  there ALL using the same notes.. just in a different order... Jazz is more accented and the Blues use half steps more often.... no harm done there

    Hi,

I kinda cringe when I hear someone say "it's this" or "it's that" ... it's just weird to me, that we have to label it in order to like it.

I just want to appreciate one of the bapu kind "music" ... without a label for once, and then have the pleasure of saying ... "that is Bapu!" ... not flipping this or that or whatever.

For once, find out something ... just play ... forget what it "is" that you are playing ... let yourself free once in a while! There is a lot of music out there!

    Speaking of this.....
I just saw the movie "When You're Strange", a movie about one of america's best rock bands. What a good story they were. Jim is alive.
I remember the drumming (who was a jazz drummer before joinging the doors) saying that people called their music a mixture of jazz and rock.

Probably have to wait for this on dvd ... Portland doesn't like far out, literary and artistic stuff. This place is strictly a top ten kisser!

Why do you say unqualified garbage like that?

I'm not sure anyone here could name one song in the top ten without first looking it up.

Unless it was one from the late '70s' early 80's...

Jonbouy - I think Mosh was talking about Portland (not coffee house). Anways, he is being sarcastic about Portland. It's a very arty city.

I believe that music is categorized in order to cater to the audience.. regardless of genre it seems to be separated to point people in a direction.. Oh you like Zeppelin you will like "70's Rock"

It's about the Benjamins my friend and that will never change

Labeling things is how we communicate

Try explaining to someone what Norah Jones is without any genre labels.....

If you hit a wrong note, it is bad.  If you hit two, it is jazz.  ;-)  I drove a cab in NYC back when.  The National Public Radio was doing a "history of jazz." The early 20s stuff was first up and I'm listening to it.  A girl gets in the cab, hears the music and starts talking to me.  Pretty soon she's asking me if I like jazz.  She seems to be quite the afficiando.  "Sure," I say, "I love all the old jazz.  It reminds me of Popeye cartoons." That shut her up and I had a nice, quiet ride.
