Guitars sound great!  The vocals seem a tad low in the mix.  But well done. Really cool tune and great playing.

Solid guitars all around, angstful vox, good story, lead voice 1st verse buried in mix but surfaces as tune goes on. Overall powerful execution, excellent impression.......enjoyed it ......Ron

    JANET
thanks. again, i seem to buck the trend of having hot vocal tracks..... i really prefer the vocals to be blended more with the instruments, so as to work better with the harmonic content of the backing tracks...i mostly sing to the music, almost as if being another instrument. i guess this comes from 70's rock influences, the vox from that time period seemed to be mostly mixed even with the music.
and i guess that means 'rock' mixes, not 'pop' mixes.
i've got a lot of early Rundgren influences going on..

still working on finding the right balance on this tho, so i appreciate your view of it, it will make me focus more on where i think the vox 'could' come up more, if they start gettting buried.
    thanks janet.

    drumstixkev
    appreciate it!
not much drums to speak of, but i did throw a rattlesnake in there!

    savageopera
    thanks for listening ron....
so you agree with janet...low vox in the beginning.
man, i thought they were just right!
    LOL
    i gotta reconsider this mix....

    guitartrek
    thanks for checking it out.
the guitars, were combinations of a real cheap Harmony 12 string, and my taylor 414. the slide was the carvin dc200 thru the boogie, into a demeter iso cab with a 57 on the speaker.
it's supposed to be real nasty and bright and harsh.....just like the character in the story!
    heheh

    glad you dig it.

    freddy j
thanks freddy, i gotta post some acoustic stuff every once in a while, just for a little balance.
i tried to NOT make this one sound to eagles-like....without the nasty slide solo stuff, it was a bit light in it's step, so originally i had acoustic solo, decided to try a really rude electric slide approach, liked that quite a bit more.....

that's a nice thing to say....

don't know why the eq would be off, channel to channel, unless i just favored a brighter track to the right..
interesting, i should be able to fix that pretty easy....
i'll try a monitoring session REAL LOUD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you don't think that making the vocals a bit louder, would force the music into the background?
i don't want to lose that feeling of having the story told along with the vibe of the guitars, which are really telling the story......

Rob, another one that I havelogged  many vertical miles to.  I wouldn't change a thing.  Doesn't sound a lot different to me than the album and I LOVE the album.  I am listening right now and can see the eastward view across the valley towards 4 Peaks range from my perch atop Lookout Mountain.  That of course was a memory for today.    I wish I was up there right now.  Great tune, great album!!!

It's mostly good right where it's at. There are places that it seemed to be a bit buried in the music. I don't think that you need to bring the volume up. I wouldn't, because of exactly what you're worried about. I'm thinking a bit of (more?) parallel compression to bring the quieter parts a little more to the front is all that's needed. That being said, it's probably more a matter of taste than anything. You should go with your gut feeling on this one.

    Outstanding song/playing/singing/mix!!

Lead and harmonies sound great from here.
Really like the 12 string with the slide.

How do you like the Carvin? Their stuff always looks
great in the catalogs but I've never known anyone
who owned one or seen anyone using one.

    Great stuff!

    WARREN
    thanks for the kind words.
i guess, the thing i might want to try different from the album, is pull the slides back a bit, drop the treble in the 1.5khz range on the slide tracks, and drop a few harmonies out, here and there, to give them more emphasis when they DO come in.

4 peaks. that's an admirable view!

    darin
    gotcha, thanks for the feedback.

    geeare1
    thanks!
well, i've had the carvin since 1984. i loved it when i got it, everything about it, except the carve shape of the neck.
i was in greenville south carolina when i got it, and i drove up to north carolina the next day, took it to Zion guitars, and had them shave the neck!!
    just like that!
and i've played it as my number one guitar ever since.
i've changed the pickups out in it, and since taken the stock kahler (which i finally wore out) and put a hybrid unit on, that lets me lock it down like a hardtail. sounds good that way.
i think carvin makes some of the very best guitars out there, and win the 'bang for the buck' award hands down.

i was shopping for a les paul, when i bought the DC200K. and have never looked back.
Allan Holdsworth, plays his signature carvin quite often.

    karalie
thanks so much for checking this out.
    i gotcha, on the lyrics....

this was kind of my version of Hendrix's re-make of 'Hey Joe'.
    it's not autobiographical....

except, i do have an ex-wife, but she never hit me with a whip.
    it was a cat-o-nine-tails.

    LOL

    the carvin:

the carvin is a 1984 DC200K, with a shaved neck, duncan custom custom in the bridge, and a Kahler trem. it's a gibson scale length.

Great song. Vocals are strong. Guitar is fantastic. The rattler is imaginative. Impressive wording.

i love the 70's classic rock stuff....
it seemed the artists then, were given lots more leeway, to mark their own path......
    to experiment....
    to find their own sound.
so much of the stuff these days, sounds exactly like what came out right before it, and before that, etc.....
i guess there are certain classic rock albums, that are still touchstones to me, and it somewhat aligns my sites on what i want my own thing to sound like.
    thanks for listening and commenting

hehe, the rattler, i have to admit, i thought that one was a no brainer.
in fact, it's a bit kitsch, don't you think?
i tried not to over do it, as it so easy with such a tired old song story as this one is.....
i suppose, there are always new folks on the planet, who haven't 'stepped in it' yet, that need somebody to whine about it, to give them a headsup!!
    LOL
it's my public service announcement, about hooking up with the wrong people!!

    glad you dig it.
by the way, i really like your line. can i steal it?

    thatsastrat
    thanks man.
the slide, i don't record a lot of slide, but i play around with it a lot, and i really like the idea of trying to nail the intonation on 'still' notes, versus putting vibrato on everything to hide the fact that it's so out of tune!!
    LOL
that's the way i play mostly, out of tune.
but on the recordings, i try to play with as much control as possible, sometimes i nail it, sometimes i miss, ah, the glory of having a punch in!!
    LOL
