Inception - the movie
Just got back from seeing it. Pretty good story line. Good acting (except Ellen Page). Music (Hans Zimmer) was way too frackin' loud. Not Hans fault I'm sure but it was working on out distancing the explosions... and it won. Sad.

I'm planning to see it this weekend. I've heard lots of good things from a lot of different people. I'll probably bring earplugs to drown out the LOUD though, I hate the volume in movies these days (NINE was absolutely painful and my ears rang for hours afterwards).

It's a sad state when you'll go to bars and clubs to see rock bands without hearing protection, but not the local cinema!

Richard Roeper gave it a great review and calls it brilliant. Then he went on to explain the story line. WHAT!?

musicman100 you are incorrect about the loudness wars arriving at the cinema. The fact is that what is really good about cinema audio is that there is a standard of loudness. It is 85 db SPL or so and what that means is that the volume is meant to be averaging around this level all the time with dialogue etc. The rms digital level that is being used to create 85 db SPL is -20 db. This means that there is 20 db of headroom above the average level of 85 db SPL. So the level can go up to 105 db SPL if the mix engineers decide to put it there. It just means in the case of 'Inception' they have decided to use the available loudness more often than not. I thought the balance was quite good in fact. But on another point I thought it was a great movie and unlike movies like 'Avatar' which really had no plot and relied on the special effects 'Inception' is definately a thinking persons movie and one that will make you think about it long after you see it. Does anybody know what it was about! Look I get the overall story but I would not mind knowing what others thoughts are on the plot of this movie.

I watched Inception a few days ago (before the Oscar Awards) on DVD (via Blu-Ray player) with a good 5.1 sound system powered by an excellent Pioneer VSX-1020 receiver. What drove me nuts was that the background music was almost always overpowering the dialog. The receiver has just about every decoder there is and I tried many of them to see if I could get an improvement over the automatically selected PCM. No joy. And then Inception gets Oscars for Sound Editing and Sound Mixing. What's up with that? --Larry

I found it problematic that halfway the film I didn't care a bit of what possibly happens to the characters. The whole bunch could have gotten killed and I wouldn't have minded. If the audience doesn't care about the characters, the film is in difficulties. I kept comparing it to Matrix 1, and I think Matrix was better, because it wasn't so neurotically packed with twists and action (like the following Matrixes were). The climax with the van falling down was brilliantly intensive and well done. The only role character of Leonardo Di Caprio I've ever cared about was in his breakthrough film Gilbert Grape.

bapu Kalle Rantaaho The only role character of Leonardo Di Caprio I've ever cared about was in his breakthrough film Gilbert Grape. What about Catch Me If You Can? That wasn't bad, but IMO the very interesting story pulled Di Caprio forward, not the other way round. Caprio wasn't giving any extra drive or substance to the film. It would have been equally good or better with a hundred of potential leading actors. Had River Phoenix been alive....I don't even dare to think. He was one of the greatest talents lost prematurely. He acting was like a cheetah running - it was just meant to be - natural ...
