Accidentally recorded at 16 bit...
Well I just realised that a song I recorded about 1-2 years ago (a year in production) was done at 16 bit. I think I had it set to 24 (as I normally do) but for some reason it switched to 16 bit and I never noticed. I never noticed, heard or even thought about it. I'm a little disappointed as it is my best recording today date, but then again I never noticed a high noise floor until now, when I found out it was at 16 bit. Now I compare it to my other stuff that is at 24 and I can hear more noise in it which is sad. But lucky for me it didn't really come out too bad. There are certain parts I wish to re-record on this song for my album anyway, and this includes everything that is played during the quiet parts except the electric rhythm guitar. I plan to upgrade my guitar gear in the near future (money dependant) anyway so I guess I might re-record the rhythm in 24 as well. A little sad to find out but it is interesting that I only noticed it once I knew - a whole YEAR later! So I guess this is a little reminder to everyone to check the bar at the bottom of SONAR when you hit record just to make sure your project is set properly!! If anyone is interested, the song is called My Best and is on my music page of my website.

I liked it! And it's not my kind of music!! I think that 16 bits is good enough for CDs so it's good enough for me! --Larry

16 bit is CD quality. If you want to record it again at 24, have at it. You should get an even better recording because in teh time between you should have gotten better on the music as well as with your mixing skills.

Thanks for the compliments guys! I certainly will be re-recording certain parts of it so hopefully that will bring the noise floor down just a little bit more. I am really amazed though at how great the noise still turned out. I guess I'm just lucky I recorded hot enough and the compression wasn't too extreme to really bring the noise out.

Look at it this way: Even at 16bit, it sounds a million times better than any of those old Motown songs. And the fact that those tunes were recorded terribly do not in any way remove their greatness or lasting power, as they will be listened and enjoyed until our children are grandparents. We get so wrapped up in the recording process that we sometimes lose the plot, that it is the song and performance, not the bit-depth, that spark the listener's ear and touch their heart.

I've done that before. It's not the end of the world. I came from DAT's anyway.

16 bit is CD quality..... but most here do use 24 bit.... just remember to set 44.1K and 16 bit as the export defaults so it will work with the majority of the CD players.
