USB 3.0 ?

I'm looking at a new system and USB 3.0 is now available on some MOBO's I just searched this form and there is only one mention of USB 3.0 from Nov 2008.
So there seems to be no hint of any new interfaces using USB 3.0 on the horizon,
It would seem that the difference in transfer speed 10x would shoot down firewire for good. Anybody heard a whisper about interfaces using it?

Speed doesn't seem to be an advantage for audio interfaces, even USB1 was fast enough for the smaller ones and USB2 is overkill. Makes for nice Ad copy but audio just doesn't seem all that, not enough data there for speed to matter.  Now for video capture USB3 will be really nice. Might even see multi channel HD interfaces.

The question is if there is anything in the USB 3.0 specs that will allow driver writers to write better drivers. Either make it easier to get it right without a lot of trial and error or maybe even lower latency, that would be nice.  If there are no advantages to the spec for drivers then it may be a while before we see any USB3 audio interfaces. Why bother if USB2 is already fast enough and most users already have it ?

USB3 should improve the throughput of USB attached hard disks which would be very nice when doing big backups.

Thanks. I kinda thought so. Yes their will be an advantage to external drives but I was going to go with a eSATA  drive system for backup.

You might check around on using eSATA.  I read somewhere that eSATA is not plugNplay.  If  the eSATA drive is not mounted you need to plug it in (or power it up) and then do something like reboot your system to make the drive appear.  Hmmmm......

If a new PC has 3.0 capability, keep in mind that older USB devices will only run at the speed of the device (e.g. USB 2.0) not the the 3.0 speed.

If the eSATA HD is connected to a HD controller in IDE mode, you'll need to power-up the external HD, then start the PC.
If the eSATA HD is connected to a HD controller in AHCI mode, you can plug it in and go...

Thanks Jim. I forgot about that difference.  Basicly the way I understand it, is the drive is just outside instead of inside. eSATA just alows for the use of one cable instead of the 2 needed inside.
I'm looking at 2 MOBOs and one comes with USB 3 and one does not.
The one with USB 3 also still has 6 USB 2 ports.

I'm going to move myself to computers to go on from here about MOBO's
I almost posted there first, Thats the trouble I have with this forum, to many places to talk about the same thing. I think Hardware and Computers are the same topic in a weird way

I think it will eventually shoot down firewire, but not all of a sudden.

Surely someone will comeup with and adapter to connect a firewire in one of those new USB-3's.

Also, I think there will be two types of usb-3 as far as size and capability. Similar to what firewire has.

It's kind of a questionable thing to me, but what else is new with standards that are not really standards?
