On off effect automation
I dont know if this is possible but maybe someone has done this before. I have inserted an effect into the effects bin. I want to automate the on off status of the insert effect. I right click the effect and choose write automation but on/off or enable/disable is not available. Is there another way to automate this? Thanks, John

It might depend on the fx, but you can right-click in the Clips pane of the Track that contains the fx. Choose Envelopes > Create Track Envelope > (name of the fx). Then in the dialog box, put a checkmark next to the parameter you want to automate. If there's not one listed for on/off, there may be one listed for bypass. Choose that and then a new envelope will be added to the track, which you can then edit with your mouse. Scott -- Scott R. Or you could insert the Fx into a bus, create a send to that bus, then control it's on/off status by automating the level the track sends to the Fx bus from the level you initally set it at (the 'on' if you like) down to -INF ('off') But there are probably several ways to achieve this, Scott has already suggested one workable method.

Thanks Scott, that parameter does not appear to be available. I figured the on off status was standard for all effects. I even checked in your book. That was helpful too. I will probably just create a new track and go from there. Thanks, John

AFAIK it's up to the VST maker what functions are open for automation. Possibility to automate on/off seems to be surprisingly rare.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Or cut up the track into clips and use clip FX to do this.

Basically we can all agree on one thing - there are MANY ways to accomplish what the OP wants.

I find that the simplest way to achieve on/off type effect automation is to insert an envelope onto the effected track that controls the 'mix' parameter of the effect. So you can then have your envelope switch between 0% and 100% mix, giving off and on. Not all effects have this parameter but many do. Hope this helps in some way!
