Hi-Tech

My internet is down at home so I have to do everything cyber related in bulk.  ...it should be up in a few days.

Here is a song i've been wrestling with the mix with for weeks.  Lot's to rope in and tame.   A friend of mine, Anton Tennance, wrote the lyric to the middle section.  My wife is always saying how the pc and my time Cakewalking is like 'another woman' so here's a little spoof to go with it. It's called
Hi-Tech.

I know i have 3 songs up here....i'm a hog.  but i'll be on a crash diet soon.

Thanks for any crits, comments or subliminal messages.

Rick... This is really a fine piece of work. Reminds me a bit of something from Thomas Dolby. Great playing and mix! That Guitar solo is killing me! (Hi-Tech??? ) Love the keys!

Gents rock!  I was listening to my mp3 today and got two gents songs in a row.  It was an omen.  it's set on shuffle!  So, I looked here and found this tune.  What a unique piece, different even for you.  Good different.  I love this tune, gent.  I couldn't think of a song like this if my life depended on it!!!!!

I agree with Warren---I couldn't think of a song like this if my life depended on it.  lol

Pretty cool song, as usual.  Vox are a little hard to hear--listening on my laptop though.  Anyway, cool tune and great playing.

And tell your wife it could be worse.

At least your wife allows you to spend time with "the other woman".

Mine wouldn't let me even play guitar for 10 years.

    Cool piece!

Absoflippinlutely outstanding!!!!!!!!!!!!!   I think that this is one of your creative and performing best.  Excellent arrangement, playing, outstanding vocals, and mix.  To me this has the sound/feel of one of my favourite groups --- the early Gang of Four.  The bass line and lead guitar work remind me of this in particular.
    Excellent!!!
I hope that you keep on being a "hog" --- you're putting out terrific stuff.

As everyone has stated – tres cool. Quirky, jerky and humorous but with enough real drive and funk to be taken seriously as a rocker. The guitar solo is “out there” for sure and fits the mood perfectly. Vocals are spot on for this – plenty of character. The lyrics are witty and work really well with the track. Great job (as usual) and one of my favs from your gang..

Rick your vocal style always reminds me of early Peter Gabriel solo work which is positive in my book.  This whole tune has overtones of his second solo album.

    1st listen:

The left? bass needs subduing in places as it conflicts with the warm lead vox.

I crave less vox warmth as the mix is plenty warm enough.  If you're not wanting to HPF the sunk vox a bit then I'd recommend HPF the bass, guitars, etc. some more to:

    1) Understand more lyrics
    2) Decrease the low end competings

The Hook: "She's Hi-Tech" sticks ... but nothing else (on 1st listen).

Though not my greatest cup of tea, I think I like this a lot more than the last one:

This is perhaps radio/TV ready as the yuppy hook and song seems exceedingly excellent and the song may serve well as TV ambience/backround.  I don't know.

OTOH, Another day I may think differently.

EDIT:  Oh!  The beats are cool!

    Hi Tap,
I like Thmas Dolby although i've never thought of him as an influence.   I'm going to have to tone down that guitar part Thanks for the hearty ears and comments!

    Warren,
I can't tell you how honored I am to be on your player.
no kidding.   Makes me happy.  Super glad you like this one too.  Probably a very good and sane thing you can't think of a song like this

    Janet,
Vox are never audible.  If they were then you'd HEAR the lyric!!!....I'll tell mrs it could be worse although i'm grooming her for it already.  Thank you.

    Hello Mark,
Thank you for the listen and kind words!

    Ron,
I see you've made up for lost time away from the guitar by employing a 30 piece orchestra to really rub it in.
    That'll teach her.
    Thank you for the listen!

    Freddy,
I remember the Gang of four!  Yeah...they were cool.  I'm flattered by the comparison.  Thank you for the listen and the big shot in the arm!

    Hey Scotty,
Thank you most kindly for the exhuberant echo!

    Manny,
It's great to hear from you.  I'm thrilled you like.  Thank you for popping in for a listen and comment.

    Guitartrek,
Yes, i think you're right about the guitar...i'll bring it down a notch or three.   THank you for the listen and notes!

    Wook,
Yes, you've mentioned PG on another occasion.   I will have to listen to one of the early recordings.  i would be surprised to hear any simularity but pleased.
    Thank you very much.

    Philip,
I'll look into the bass being too dominant and also i'll dump some of the low end on the vox...although i already have a very filtered vox on there.
I'll work on making more memorable hooks as it's always a favorite game of mine.
NOt sure how this would work as a background on TV, but since i haven't had one for 25 years, i'm no authority on the subject.
thanks very much for the listen and notes.

    Hi Rick,

    Great song, vocals/harmonies/mix...etc.

I don't know how you manage to be so prolific...

I love that vocal 'a oh' on the right

Love the guitar solo, too...totally cool, as always from you!

+1 to that Wook, you're right. Definitely a PG/Robert Fripp feel.

Rick this is excellent, really well put together and tons of creativity in the mix - love those guitar scrapes and synth details.

    Wow! What a great song.
    Intro just the right length.
Chorus and verses just the right length.
    Words really really good.
    Singing quality good.
Instrument solo included--and a good length, too, but it was such a nice guitar line that it could have gone  a tad longer. As it is, though, it never gets boring.

Nothing blared at me, and I didn't have to strain to hear anything. Guess that means it sounded mixed well from my found-in-back-of-an-apartment-building-to-put-out-to-trash karaoke speakers.

I was expecting a fade out on these words: she's high tech with that tinkling that you end the song with in between repetitions of she's high tech.
