Newbie using sonar studio instruments

Is there a short cut on the keyboard for using the instruments? For example when u want to use the built in drums u have to click on the part of the drum you want to hear. I was wondering if you could hit a number or letter on the keyboard and make it happen.

    Do you have a MIDI keyboard or a MIDI controller? Surely that would be better than using the numerical keyboard?

    with SI , remember if it's a pre-made pattern you can also drag  / drop into your sequencer
