Sample disc

yesterday I bought a used computer, and some other items, the guy was into music , he had a bunch of sample disc on his hard drive, i have no idea if these sample discs were purchased legally. he said he bought everything legally online.. I bought this computer in good faith hopefully everything is legit. some of the loops aren't in folders so I have no idea of the maker, What should I do? Am I infringing on copyrights if I use? I guess when in dout dont use.. But dose good faith play any role here?

LOL  .. I contacted the company , they told me I cant rebuy used sample cd's. and that they are watermarked and I will be sued if I use in a commercial release. I have no idea what that means but , I wont be using these cd's. The funny part is alot of the loops sound exactly the same as some loops I already own from other sample cd's.  How can they find out if I used a 909 kick and added compression efxs ect,, and changed the whole sound. It sounds the same as everything else aren't they ripping off someone else. I dunno. best to throw em out.. But I really dont want to...

    Hi,

Not sure I would not want to start fresh with a computer that was used before. Regardless of what was in there, I probably would format the whole thing and reinstall all the software, so the machine has my problems, not someone else's.

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

Was this a friend you bought from, or a stranger?  I'd reimage too, especially if this wasn't from a friend.
God knows what could be on that PC that you might not find, sampled music could be the least of your worries.

This is one of the major downsides of reusing recorded sounds to make music. You can be sure that everything that is recorded is copyrighted (the process of recording fixes the US copyright without any further action), but you can rarely be sure how it is licensed. unless you have in your possession all of the original disks and licenses. Even then are you certain that the copy you bought was not swiped from someone else? The courts have generally held that even tiny snippets of other people's recordings are not covered under fair use, and in the case of instrument samples, those snippets are the product that is being sold/protected.

It is certainly possible to put a digital watermark on a sample, and some sites are already scanning uploaded files to detect this. It is not inconceivable that a publisher might run copies of hit songs to detect that his stuff was not appropriated on the off chance that he could launch a successful suit.

Considering the age of the laptop(based on it's description) I doubt they used watermark technology... most likely just a way to get more money out of you...

I just worked a screening of a movie called Copyright Criminals... dealing with all the "sampling" from the 80's 90's hip hop/dance/rap etc artists.  A great flick if you want to come up with your own opinion..... Basically it is up to you... there are things you can use (like a kick drum sample, snare, etc) that cannot really be determined if it is one persons or another. There are also processing techniques used to alter the waveforms and lets get real.. if you use a sample even with a watermark.. where does the water mark go when you "bounce" your project? It is being re-encoded.

    Just food for thought.

Used computer like that I would copy any loops I like. Then I would load  up what ever OS that you prefer to use cleaning up the hard drive. and tweek the system  to my likings.

I don't know about you but I have to have my computers tweaked for me. WHAT!
