Sudden noise issues with Lexicon Alpha and MC5

Have been using my Lexicon Alpha with MC5 for a year and very happy with it. Started getting a harsh static sound when recording - lasts a few seconds, stops for a while, then repeats, almost rhythmic. Makes it unusable.

Suspected my laptop since it is getting old; until I loaded MC5 and hooked the Lexicon up to my better, newer faster laptop at work and have the same problem.

Here is the kicker: decided to install the Cubase Le software that comes with the Lexicon and for grins tried some simple recordings --------- and no noise!

Now I don't want to start fresh and learn Cubase. I am devoted to Cakewalk and am in the middle of some projects.

Any theories, my gurus? Maybe there is a setting on the Lexicon (within MC5)  that has gotten altered?

Is that staticky sound also recorded?
Have you recently started using the Ampltube guitar amp simulator that comes with MC 5?
What's your Driver Mode when using the Lex?

This amplitude thing may be the issue. I see someone else has a similar problem (thread entitled 'repeating hiss in master'). I don't think I'm even using Amplitude, but this gives me something to explore and it would explain why the problem isn't occurring in Cubase.

When I get back to Meadowman Studios International (my basement) I will check out your suggestions.
    Thanx.

meadowman - the amplitube is automatically inserted with the default template.  it's on the guitar track.

I de-installed Amplitude and then realized it was being used in that guitar track in the default template.

It does seem to have cured this noise problem. Thanks folks.

The registration process was fighting me too much; I may resserect that later after this project is done.
