Exported Audio is Blank

hi everyone,

this is a bit of an emergency here... i need to get these tracks exported today...

i've been working with Sonar for years and know how to export audio. but starting today for some reason, when I export the track I'm working on to a wav file, the wav file is completely blank. it still is multiple megs in size, but when i play it i hear nothing and when i load it back into sonar there are no waveforms.

i'm in sonar 8.5 64 bit on windows 7... to export, i'm just highlighting everything (making sure to highlight the softsynth tracks as well as the midi tracks), go to file, export, type in a name, i change it to 16 bit, make sure it says entire mix, it has my outputs (m-audio ozonic 1/2) selected, and hit ok. i've been doing that for years. and now it doesn't work.

now one more note. i had yesterday under options - audio, i switched to the asio drivers. this morning i noticed some crackling and switched back to wdm which is what i had had it on before. i'm guessing this has something to do with what's wrong, but i don't know what to do / look for that might have also been changed in the process.

thanks

Dave

I am noticing some pops / clicks on the ozone drivers myself .. on the ozonic, is there a switch for 16/24 bit? have you altered that also?

also what about the latency, when you have the tracks up in sonar, you have waveform preview on and they play fine?

you haven't muted any busses etc?

did you unplug / replug in the ozonic at any point ? as it might have issues with the windows "default" audio card.. is your onboard set as your windows default device? , thats what I do to avoid any conflicts..

just a few suggestions, but I need to suss out if the ozone drivers itself are bad and complain.. I have a few sequencers to find out on.

quick note! i just tried exporting a different song and it worked... so it's just that one song (happens to be the one i was working on when i tried switching the driver earlier). any idea where i can look for something wrong in the track?

since i've upgraded to my new computer with 64bit and everything i haven't noticed any problems with pops/clicks on the ozonic. i definitely had some back on windows xp 32bit though. i haven't looked for a 16/24bit switch. i'ill look into that but i just exported a different song and it worked perfect, so it must be something within this particular project that got changed when i switched drivers. i was thinking in the track properties for each track maybe? but it all looks right as far as i know...

definitely. i did have an audio track that was in there as a temp track muted. but i just deleted that track altogether just to see if that helped but no go... i did just realize though that in the Export window, under Source Busses/Tracks, even though Ozonic 1/2 is what's selected (blue highlighted), it kinda looked like the text is grayed out...

so i just tried switching it back to asio. that didn't help either. and then i switched it back again to wdm. what i am noticing now though is that my exported wav file is only 4k rather than the few megs that it should have been and was 10 minutes ago... i think i saw something about exported audio being only 4k while searching for an answer before posting... i'm gonna look that up...

    I GOT IT!!!

i found another post with a similar question to this and a guy named guitartrek had said he always keeps the "use 64 bit engine" in the export window unchecked... that made it work. stupid 64 bit. :-)

thanks everyone for your help. :-)

Glad you got it. It can be annoying to have deadlines and gear that just won't work.

64 bit processing works fine on my system, but there must be some compatibility issue somewhere.  Glad you got it working!

yea it's weird, cause 64 bit works with everything else, just not the exporting... and come to think of it... just not in that specific project with exporting haha. i'm sure it was the very specific combination of synths, settings, and whatevers within that project that 64 bit didn't like. oh well. good to go. now lets just hope the client likes what i've got :-)

I have had this problem before too.  What I did to fix it was to make sure all tracks to be exported were selected.  It seems to be a strange problem that comes and goes.  No consistency to it.

you know one way to ensure that you for really really 100% for sure have everything selected is to hit ctrl-A... cause otherwise i've had times where i am REALLY sure i have everything selected and apparently i don't. which makes no sense. but ctrl-A seems to be pretty fail-proof.

Yep, that's the ticket.  Had a fairly long conversation with tech support, and the 'method' is to select all before bounce.  Even they don't really know why, but it works every time.  Just make sure stuff you don't need is muted, and not just hidden.

I can't be sure, but even when I selected all, I think there have been times when things did not export properly, but I may not have been using Ctrl-A.  I'll make sure I use that from now on.  Thanks for the heads up!!
