Unable to open audio playback device

Hi to all the friendly souls reading this message!

I'm not sure where to post this question. It seems the Sonar Power Studio Forum is just as dead as the sps-66 as interface for Sonar.

I have Sonar 8.5 and I just bought a Power Studio 660, hoping to end all my troubles with Sonar.

I installed the Win7 drivers (32-bit) and they installed fine, but Sonar already started out with some error messages about incompatible hardware, which I chose to ignore (after all I'm using a SONAR interface now) and clicked on "use anyway". I even uninstalled the drivers and re-installed them, just to make sure and I didn't get any error messages starting Sonar after that.

Now, when I load one of the demo projects, only the MIDI demos work, but not the ones with wave audio. I'm always getting the above message ( Unable to open audio playback device).

I tried changing the sample rate on the interface (from 96 to 48 and 41) but it doesn't help.

I disabled the onboard soundcard to avoid any conflicts.

I checked " share drivers with other programs". in the audio options. I closed Sonar after every change and restarted, but that doesn't make any difference.

What else is there to try?

Obviously, there seems to be a conflict with the sample rates, but I cannot change it in audio options. It only accepts 96k and I get an error message saying the driver will only allow 96K.

I can play the soft synths, which I'm pretty happy about, but I need to know what the issue is with the demo projects or I'll DIE!

I bought my first copy of Cakewalk Software almost exactly 20 years ago in 1990, so I'm somewhat familiar with the software.

Hope you can help!

Thanks!

it obviously has nothing to do with sample rates.
I suspect the words,

I get an error message saying the driver will only allow 96K.

if the device has a 97k rate, it must be able to supply 48k rate.

can't play audio, it must have something to do with driver, how about to try asio , wdm/ks and so on one by one?
or stop 64bits choose box?

Probably wasn't a good idea to ignore those messages. Now you need to figure out what hardware was incompatible. I assume you're using Windows 7 32-bit as your OS. Be sure to download the Sonar Power Studio 5.2 update.

Go to Options-Audio-Drivers and make only the SPS is selected as your input and output. Go to Options-Audio-Advanced and make sure the driver mode is set to ASIO or WDM, but not MME. Use 16 bit as the bit rate and 44100 as the sample rate.

Re:Unable to open audio playback device 2010/08/02 13:15:42 (permalink)
Thank you for your responses!

I am not using the Sonar 5 product that came with the interface. I have Sonar 8.5 and I’m trying to use that.

I tried changing the driver type from ASIO to WDM and I got the following error messages (which I already received initially when I first started Sonar):

The following audio output devices used by this project are not available. You may reassign them to any other available device, or click OK to accept the default assignments below Click Cancel to retain the original output assignments. (These outputs will remain silent until reassigned to an available output.

Cakewalk SPS-66 LineOut 12 left                  SPS-66 Out 1”

This message appears 3 times and I have to accept or cancel the assignment, so I accepted.

When I change the sampling rate to 48k and the bit depth to 16-bit it says:

The following drivers either do not support the current audio format, or are in use by another application. Please choose whether you want to disable them or use them anyway”

When setting it back from WDM to ASIO:

The default audio format is not compatible with one or more sound cards. It has been reset to 96000 Hz (32-bit), as suggested by the driver

Whatever I do, the system is stuck at 96k/24-bit, even though the message says 32-bit. I cannot change the bit-depth at all. It is grayed out and fixed at 24-bit. The sampling rate can be changed but upon exiting the settings window, I always get the error message that the driver only allows 96000. There is only one driver available for download for the sps-66 under Windows 7 32-bit and that's the one I'm using.

I can play Soft synths fine but I cannot play any audio files.

I even completely disabled all the sound drivers in Windows, so there is no sound device installed for output or recording anymore. For Sonar, this makes no difference whatsoever.

It would be very helpful if someone with an SPS-66 or an FA-66 could tell me how to set up this system.

Before I installed the SPS-66, I used the internal sound card, which showed no driver issues at all. However, it did a pretty poor job playing the softsynths.

My computer, by the way, is a 2.4GHz Core2 laptop.

first thing.. go into audio setup , drivers

see something like

in my case... I wanna use the Delta in asio mode.... to allow it to do that untick your other cards.. e.g.. realtek etc.

apply..then you can select asio mode again in audio

i'm guessing it's taking your timing master off your onboard card.. if your onboard is enabled , you won't be able to select asio mode.

that device is firewire, which might be the problem if your firewire card isn't well Ti chipset perhaps...also the switch on the back of the unit, perhaps set it to 44.1 or 96 to see if matters improve.

Re:Unable to open audio playback device 2010/08/02 14:49:03 (permalink)
Thanks for your suggestions, Fog!

My onboard card is disabled and does not appear in the drivers list. I have 3 input drivers (Line, Mic and Spdif) and 3 output drivers (LineOut 1/2, LineOut 3/4 and Spdif) listed.

My Playback timing master is SPS-66 LineOut 1/2 and the Recording timing master is SPS-66 MicIn.

If the firewire card would be the problem, then I don't think I would have such great sound from the SoftSynths. I can, however, load any number of softsynths and play like 20 tracks parallel without any issue at all.

The problem is the driver, which won't allow anything else but 96K and 24-bit. Changing the sampling rate on the interface unit doesn't seem to make any difference at all. I have it set to 48k and the driver still insists on 96k.

I can record audio just fine. Mic and guitar record and play back without any problem. However, I cannot change the settings and therefore I cannot play any audio that isn't 24-bit 96k.

Very strange!

Try reinstalling the SPS (uninstall then install) and take note of any messages.

When you switched to WDM mode, did you run the Wave Profiler?

Hi Dave,

My SPS is installed in Windows (although I have it disabled for Windows use) and it is also recognized by Sonar. I can record vocal and guitar performances through the front inputs, I can play back recorded audio and I can play all the softsynths. My onboard card is disabled and doesn't appear in Windows or in Sonar.

I did already completely uninstall and re-install the driver. Didn't help.

Did you buy the SPS-66 new or used?

As a matter of fact, Sonar ran the Wave Profiler automatically and came up with only 96k as a valid sampling rate. All other sampling rates appeared as "unavailable".

I bought the SPS on Amazon. I think it is new and it came with all the original packaging and stuff.

Wasn't able to post anymore. Always got error messages when posting. What's going on?

Did you follow this process:

Installing SONAR Power Studio Hardware: SPS-66
Note: DO NOT connect your SPS-66 Hardware to your computer until you are instructed to do so by the onscreen dialog. Connecting your unit prematurely could disrupt the driver installation process.

If you connected the SPS-66 Hardware prematurely, disconnect it and uninstall the driver by double-clicking the UNINSTAL.EXE program in the Hardware/Edirol FA-66/Driver/XP_EN folder on the installation CD.

The instructions are at: http://www.cakewalk.com/s...Reader.aspx?ID=2005309

I'll bet you have the Sample Rate switch on the back set to 96KHz.

I followed the driver instructions very carefully. For sake of making triple sure, I just did it again: unplugged the interface, uninstalled the driver, rebooted, installed the driver, connected the interface when directed to do so and "installation successful". No error messages when starting Sonar. But still the bit depth is gray and set to 24 and the sampling rate doesn't allow any other setting but 96000.

I'll bet you have the Sample Rate switch on the back set to 96KHz.

You would have lost that bet! I tried setting it to each of the formats available and it doesn't make any difference to Sonar. When trying to change it in the audio options to any other rate I'm getting the message "The default audio format is not compatible with one or more sound cards. It has been reset to 96000 Hz (32-bit) as suggested by the driver".

Larifari,

For any sample rate changes to take effect you need to:

1) Switch the sample rate on the device
2) Disconnect and reconnect the device either by physically unplugging it or power cycling it from the Bus - Off - AC switch.

Best Regards,
Seth

This thread helped me with a similar problem.  I had changed my UA-25EX to 48KHz and could no longer play any of my older projects.  I lost a couple of hours of my life (seems to happen a lot with Sonar) trying to figure this out.  Swapping back to 44KHz and pulling and reinstalling the USB fixed this.

Do you think the error message could have been more informative?  "Hey, this file is a 44khz file.  Your soundcard only supports 48khz!"  would have been helpful.  Instead it basically says it doesn't work and it has no clue why and it throws a few bad leads in with it.  I couldn't even play midi or even sample the soft synths.
