When Shadows Fall - New original Vocal
My latest project. This is tune dedicated to the working man or woman and why we do it. It's a snapshot of a day-in-the-life of those who spend the day working for a better life at home. Sometimes you just need to take stock of what's important. For you guitar buffs, there just might be some 3-part guitar harmony in here too! Let me know what doesn't set right on your speakers.. Thanks. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=582907&content=songinfo&songID=9475279 When Shadows Fall [ Verse 1: Another empty sunrise Up before the Dawn Another cup of coffee’s Already gone Miles of blacktop highway Leave the dust behind Another day of dues to pay Another axe to grind Chorus: But When the day is over And I find myself back home I Remember why we carry on Our dreams will never die Like a sunset in the sky Here with you When Shadows Fall Late at Night When Shadows Fall Verse 2: Your nose is to the grindstone Your back’s against the wall Your hands reach out for another load Your mind slows to a crawl No time to feed the hunger No time to smell the rose No mind to roam away from home Where the peaceful waters flow Verse 3: One More Day Behind Me One More Mile to Go One More Dollar to My Name And One Seed Left to Sow The Day is growing weary The Sun is Sinking Low My Soul Set Free Your face I see When the Shadows Start to Grow

I can't listen at work as they block soundclick here, but I already like the lyrics a lot and I can't wait to give it a close listen when I get back home tonight. I'll send in some feedback later on - thanks for posting this!

Sounded good, but I occasionally heard timing issues (Gliches ?) that I'm guessing are coming from SC. I'll try again at a later time. Really nice tune. Nice lyrics and singing is fine. Guitar playing is stellar as always.

I love the way you write lyrics. Great vocals. Vocal harmonies are Marty Robbins-ish. Nice guitar harmonies. On my system the drums sound a bit flat in the midrange and maybe a tad too bright. But that's just nitpicking.

As noticed above by Mark, I'm hearing the same thing concerning the drums. The latin percussions is a nice touch. Listening on my ATH M50. Vocs and harmonies are sounding real good. Kudos on the lyrics. Solid guitar work (tone & melodies)... as usual. Excellent production Daryl!

Thanks for the comments and observations. I will definitely check on the drum track EQ. Thanks. Mark - Thank you. I loved Marty Robbins. Gunfighter Ballads is one of the all time classic albums. My favorite as a small child. The album jacket hangs in my studio as a decoration!

very nice song with easy going mood that I like a lot. Great lyrics, vocal and guitar work. Smooth sounding! My only suggestion would be use the 4 bar intro just once (4 measures), as it sounds like it simply repeats. You can have an 8 bar intro but measures 5-8 should be different from measures 1-4 (IMO). There are some interesting chord progressions in the breaks and one chord somewhere in the guitar break I though needed a slight change in the chord. It did not stick out like a sore thumb, I'm just extra picky as I listen with a music-theory approach. Great song!

Mike - Good observations but the chords are as written. I have always been a chord guy, even at a very young age. I got Mel Bay's "4400 Chords" book and I leaned them all and I use them regularly and consequently I'm a huge fan of jazz chord melodies, inside chords, etc, and as of late I've been working extensively with open string chords where the fretted notes are played above the 5th fret to provide greater contrast with the open strings. I'm just so amazed at how many open string chords are available - hundreds actually! They have such a different voice that it really changes how you apply melodies or improvise over them. What you might hear is tension between the melody and probably a +9 or 6th chord (or maybe even a root note in the melody over a maj 7th chord) all of which are used extensively in this. I thought about the intro the same way you did but decided I wanted to nail the groove into the listener so I stayed with the repeated mantra in the opening bar. But your points are well taken. Thanks for the careful listen and so happy you liked the tune. Gary - Thanks so much. Love your Ellington quote - it fits me like a glove, it's just the way I feel.

Cool tune... clever lyrics, nice changes, and great tone... I agree with mark regarding the drum sound, and if I may, I would suggest cutting out some of the drum fills... seems a little busy and distracting to me... Your voice is strong, and the guitar playing is outstanding... Well done...

Daryl I thoroughly enjoyed this piece, very nicely done. Your guitar work is brilliant. Your vox are great and very well-mixed. I did not hear any timing issues, and I also liked the way you did the combined percs, I didn't think they were overdone. The point where you have the guitar solos in between the verses, was especially nice I thought. A very good groove in this combination of soft/easy country-rock style. Darn well done! Thanks for sharing it!

Hi Daryl Sweet guitar playing. I love the little pre-verse phrases....Mix sounds like it needs some lower mids. Your singing (and harmony) is good. Love those shakers in the chorus. Very nice.

Jeffery - Thanks for you kind words and thanks for noticing the octaves. Just a few years ago and a number of decades after I had started playing guitar, I finally decided that I needed to learn how to improvise and comp using octaves. I figured since every guitar player I admired seemed to be able to do it fluently, that I should be able to do it to. I mean after all how hard can it be if everyone can do it? Well you know, I was right. It's not that hard. The key is to think of the octave positions (there are only two of them (1st string + 3rd String / 2nd string 4th string) and (3rd string 5th string / 4th string 6th string) and the fact that you have to mute whatever 4 stings you're not playing at the time. The key is to think of these two octave positions as CHORD FORMS. Once you do that it is no harder than learning a new chord form. Now that are a lot of variations you can add by adding a third string to the mix but then it's no longer just an octave. Learning to comp freely with octaves is like learning 2 new chords. It really is that easy. But to be honest I played every melody I could think of for about two months with octaves before it became easy. Just do anything you can think of from Beatles tunes to Mary Had A Little Lamb. It doesn't matter - just play the octaves and it will happen. That's a nice looking Ibanez? you have in your picture. Always good to see a hollow body guitar man. I've been a hollow body fanatic since I was 13. I've owned a lot of solid bodies and still do, but my heart belongs to hollow guitars! If your not already a fan of Johnny A - check him out - you will love what you hear!

Nice, moody, laid-back tune Daryl. Superb guitar work/harmonies. I think you sung this very well, especially the harmonies! Good lyrics too..all the qualities of a great song. I did hear some timing anomolies (percussion?) in the beginning, but then, it smoothed out. I like this tune a lot. Larry

Hey Daryl. Yes that is an affordable Ibanez Artcore. Very good for the money. I got turned onto the use of octave riffs by Third Stone From the Sun and then Smashing Pumpkins "Siamese Dream". After that in the mid-90s I took to jazz and practiced transitioning from octave to single note phrasing. I need to practice more like you in learning common melodies and becoming more comfortable with the 2nd/4th string octave position. Thanks for the insights into your practice regimen.

Superlative tone from your guitar, Daryl. Excellent drum track. Good solid vocals and strong lyrics. I like the turnaround at the end of the chorus. I particularly like the way in which you go from single note lead to octaves, great playing. Good clean mix too. Well done.

Did you mean for the song to start right at the onclick? It does. I'm accustomed to a slight pause at the beginning of a song. You managed to take something so mundane as working and made it into a romantic poem. Everything works in this song. The solos are good. The vocal chorus comes in at the right places. But I wish those backup voices were louder. I can barely hear them.
