Intel i7-950 price cuts coming soon!!? Worth it?

I just read here: http://www.forum.aerosoft.com/index.php?showtopic=35930 that Intel is about to slash the prices of their i7 line of cpus. It's looking like the i7-950 will be around $294. I am in the market for upgrading my current DAW and I was going to go with the i7-920. However, now that I see the new price cuts coming soon, I am thinking more about the 950. In your opinion, do you think the 950 is worth buying over the 920 at that price? Would I gain alot more over the 920?

Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

It's not what we're doing, it's how you do it :)

If the budget will allow, always go for the "biggest and baddest" you can afford.   When I built my PC a couple of years ago the Q6600 was the top line, it isn't today, but I'm still "ahead of the game".  If I would have went with a less expensive CPU, I may not have been able to run current applications without sacraficing performance.

I'd say wait for the 950 price drop.  It will give each of the cores a bit more processing power (3.06Ghz versus 2.66Ghz) at a decent price.  I own a 920 right now and I'm not disappointed at all (nor would you be), but if you can wait for the drop you'll get a bit more horsepower that might last you a bit longer before you need to upgrade again.

    Hope this helps,
    Tom

both the 920 and 950 are discontinued. (some stock still available but)
    the present ones are 930/960.
Intel already dropped pricing in July. there will be no more price drops until Sandy Bridge is released (next yr)
930 is the best option and over clock it. (3.6GHz)

Thanks for the replies guys!  Just curious, If Intel dropped pricing already, why are the 950's still at $559? Is it b/c it's discontinued?

none of my Disties (checked 4) have any stock on this product. (due to the 960 being the same price or less)
so whats out there is already in the hands of retail. i doubt anyone will drop the price below what they paid.
shoot newegg even has it for more then the 960, would would be dumb enough to buy it.
or would come from Asia (grey market)
if Intel has any stock they might dump it for less to 1 distie as a 1 time offer.

well it would seem i was wrong about this.

    this from intel today.
On August 29th, Intel will launch the following processors:
Meanwhile, effective August 29th, we will reduce the price on the following processor:

Core i7 950 - ~ 49% (this processor will now be at price parity with the Core i7 930) but as i said its not listed at any of my disties... maybe they will relist once the price drops..

Hey rockoman I would look at the AMD processors as the most powerful AMDS are cheaper with comparable stats. Don't count AMD out!!!

uhmm not even close dude not for audio.

the 1090T cant even beat a 750 processor.
never mind one that goes on a X58 platform.
and no they are not less.

    Picked up a 950 @ $229 today.

Still deciding on a board, but there are dropping prices on a bunch of components.

Why no SSDs? Run two in a Raid0 and you are SCREAMING.

no point to an SSD especially in raid0.
good for live gigs in a laptop
too small for a samples drive
as an OS it makes windows a tad snappier but has no effect on audio
as a recording drive a complete waste of $

for video editing it does help as an OS drive due to the temp files.

I've got two 1TB conventional HDs in RAID-0 (for streaming samples) in the "Cube" I use to play live.
2TB of storage space... with Writes and Reads of 230-260MB/Sec.
That's enough speed to breeze thru 256+ notes of disk-streaming polyphony.
    Total cost $180

SSD is currently a very niche product.
There are situations where it's a good solution (mentioned above)
But for most folks/scenarios, conventional HDs are hard to beat.

Once SSD has matured (with substantial increase in storage space and substantial decrease in price)... they'll be far more popular.

    Scott,

In your opinion, what are some good cases to go with? Since you deal in volume, what are the best Power Supply and Cases you work with? And what is Mid-level?

tough question to answer as far as cases as i have to look at many products in the eyes of
    "how well will they ship"
    "how well do they cool"
most cases sadly do not ship well.
many of those that do are very pricey.

power supply Jim feel free to jump in

Antec earth watts 500w nice budget PS and pretty quiet.
for bettter i recommend Coolermaster silent pro m or gold. very low failure rate and very quiet.

cases  for budget the coolermaster sileo with included 500w (genreally not a big fan of included PS but this one is not so bad
antec solo built like a tank
i do not like the included PS with Antec however, but again have not used them in awhile as they had a severly high fail rate a few yrs back

the coolermaster haf cases are pretty decent but do not ship well.
coolermaster cosmos is a monster case (does not ship well at all)

For a power supply, I picked up this because it reviewed good and was a great price point. But the Cooler Master has a 135mm fan compared to the Antec's 80mm. I prefer to buy the case and PS seperately.

    http://www.frys.com/product/5278537

I am always a firm believer of having more power than I need.  Most boards require >500w, and power supplies are usually under what they are rated. I like the overhead.

Have to check out those cases.

P.S. Sorry to hijack the thread. I feel shame :(

Yes, shipping durability is a factor we have to consider.

The Sonata-III was a nice balance of quiet/cost/features, but they changed the PS to a unit that's just a little too loud.
The CoolerMaster Sileo is a nice Mid-tower case.  Especially nice if you pair it with a quiet/robust 3rd party PS.
The Antec Solo is also a nice case...

Of those three, my first choice would be Sileo with 3rd party PS.
