Prisms Inside the Void

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=9384239

I don't know what to say about this one. Acoustic gtr, sax and an interesting drum beat.

Having trouble keeping the toms and bass gtr up without muddying the rest.

Would love your feedback on the instrumentation, etc.

Thanks.

After a lot of mixing hours we finally got this copy together:

I think the bass and drums cleared up nicely.

Would love some feedback on the mix and song in general.

Hey, Jeffrey - how's it been going?

really nice guitar work on this.  bass is nice, too.  I'm going to have to be honest, tho, and I hope it's OK.  vox are pitchy and the sax sounds very "midi-ish"  what did you use for the sax?

Beagle: Hey. Been doing well. Hope you are. Thanks for commenting, I was beginning to think the song really sucked or something.

I have thought the sax was too bright all along. I was blessed to have a real player lay the sax down. He did a couple of takes and we selected this soprano sax version. We've been stuggling to get the low end right and leave room for the gtr and vox.

I'll ask my producer friend to look at the sax.

As for the pithy vox, is it mainly when I go to the FMa7 chorus or is it throughout? I had a hard time going to the chorus in this song, which is from Dm7 to FMa7. I was hoping the drums would hide it because I know it was hard to hit.

Let me know if it is that spot or throughout.

I had a breakthrough last week in redoing some vox, but I didn't redo this one. Guess I should.

    Thanks again.

you know I thought that some of the sax parts sounded real, but other parts didn't.  when he puts some wind in it then it sounds good, but maybe your producer EQ it too much or something to take out the breathy parts or the sheen to make it sound bad in places.

for the vox, I'll have to listen again and try to take notes of the problem areas.  not tonite, tho.

I thought that soft intro was a little strange. Had to turn up my volume and then turn it down.

I liked the sax line. Gave it nice accents. Like an "amen" corner. Gave it a joyful feel in what could have been a somber song. Couldn't you bring some more instruments in besides, or along with, the sax? Some strings? Couldn't the singer come in one more time before the sax took us out? It was too short of a goodby from the singer. He sang with so much heart and left too quickly as if he didn't mean it.

Love the horn in this... Very cool tune... Vocal is a little pitchy, but that's an easy fix with the right software...

    Very nice...

Hey Peggy. Thanks again for checking it out. This was my first time paying a studio to record some material. I miss timed several elements of this track and another one and ended up adjusting the lyrical structure to make up for it.

I only had elements of the lyrics to repeat at the point I stopped and so I cut it off there. I am glad "the singer" left you wanting more!

I asked him to mix the intro with a slow fade in as if you were walking down a hall toward the player and come around the corner and "smack" right in the face with his crescendo. I've long dreamt of recording with a horn player and this was a great experience.

Thank you Frank. Bringing this song to life was a great experience. I've carried it in my head for a long, long time.

I think my friend has a new pitch plug-in and will ask him about it.

    Cheers.

Oh and yes, the horn player is named Evan Thee and he is from my area of North Carolina. He works as a player on cruise liners 8 months a year or so. He told me all about the gig and the only draw back is they can't use the pool because it is too crowded. Other than that he gets free room and board, meals and gets paid to work four hours a day in the evening.

    What a great country!
