Anyone up for some hillbilly music? :)

Some of my church bandmates came over yesterday for some recording. This was recorded live and raw but was a lot of fun:

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=9506209

It's "When God Dips His Love in My Heart" - originally by Allison Kraus and Dolly Parton. No editing other than  EQ, compression and reverb but I think I'll leave it that way.

Any comments & mix advice welcome!

Dave this is nice. Since it is pretty much raw...... that makes it all that much better. Nice harmonies that sound really good, no melodyne needed...... it sounds like something you might hear on a porch on a Sunday afternoon or evening in the South.

    yeeeeee haaaaaaaaw!!!

very nice harmonies in this!  very nicely done.

you've recorded too much of the room, tho, IMO, which gives it a very "amateur sound" (please don't take that the wrong way!) - this is mainly on the vocals - you probably used one mic on both women but they're too far from the mic.  the bass doesn't sound like that, the acoustic does a little, but not as much as the vox.

really nice work, tho!  nicely done all around - the women have great voices!

Thanks Herb! I think the raw vibe fit the song/style well too...

I hear what you're saying Reece. Each singer had their own mic, but since it was a live recording just for fun I didn't spend a lot of time on mic placement. Actually since there are so many dynamics on the vocals, I just basically said "stand about a foot away and back up a bit when you start wailing!" We did 4 takes in about 20 minutes so "it is what it is". But yes, if I was going for something more "professional" I would have spent more time on mic placement and coached the singers a little more on where to stand. Thanks for the feedback!

Ya buddy --- good one.  I think that you have captured the feel of a live, go-to-meetin' performance.  Great harmonies and great playing.  I can't comment on the recording aspect because I wouldn't know what I was talking about, but this sounds good to me.

Thanks Freddy! And don't sell yourself short on your recording knowledge - you put out some great stuff so you obviously know what you're talking about!

Great song and performances... vocals are a little hot and could use some EQ, but I still loved it...

Wow Scott - I think you might have been hitting the moonshine a little hard when you typed that comment, but I will take it!!

Frank - I've since made some eq adjustments and have been working the volume envelopes on the vocal tracks but haven't uploaded a new mix yet. I appreciate your ear and thanks for the listen and comments!

Thanks Janet - maybe we'll start a variety show down in Branson! Actually this is the kind of music I really don't care to listen on a regular basis but it just is fun to play!

A toe tapper.  Tap your toe for Jesus!!  Definitely sounds live and that's what makes it so nice.  You sure have a knack for this live thing.  I have yet to go there, as far as recording goes.  The girls sound like they're having fun and that makes it fun for everyone!!

Well thanks Warren and Scott (again!). I've been blessed to work with so many talented people both in my studio and through internet collabs.

As much as I love putting together a recording that takes days or weeks to lay down the parts, I think I enjoying trying to capture a great live performance the most.

I've got 16 songs that we recorded over 2 sessions that need mixing so I've got my work cut out for me! Fortunately they're just looking to have it ready to give out for Christmas presents so I'm in no rush...

    Dave,
This is very cool!  For a live performance this is incredible.  I'm impressed with the vocalists.  They did a gret a great job.

Sounds like this was lots of fun to record.

Excellent Dave! I love the mix as is..really captures that live, country/backwoods vibe. I agree that you should leave it as is..I think if you try and 'polish' this, you'll remove the natural finish...Incredible man!

The acoustic guitar sounds very warm and played well, especially those complimenting lead lines/hooks/bass not runs.

I almost hear mando/banjo in there, tho you didn't mention any...

You made my ears go all 'pointy' with this one!! :)

    Hillbilly music??

Not my cup of tea, but this is really engaging. Kudos to Andrea and Jennifer for their strong performance. The acoustic guitar work is also notable. And live to boot. The bass introduction is real smooth and natural. Nice touch. Excellent production Dave. Bravo!

    Thanks guys!

Nope, Larry, no mandolin/banjo - but this guy's picking style (with the thumb & finger picks) plus the capo on the 5th fret kind of makes it sound that way sometimes.

    Have a great weekend!

It may be raw, but it's heartfelt. You hear it in the singing. And heartfelt always works.
