So... this should be easy: MIDI Outputs

I feel like this should be a really easy question (but what do I know).

So I've got my keyboard wired to my Cakewalk soundcard by MIDI cable and I've got my hearing-cells connected to the soundcard by headphones. But I can't hear the Input Echo (realtime feedback) from the headphones like I do with audio.

The only sound I get is from the speakers when I select the "Wavetable Synth" as my output, but that's got crazy latency so I don't want that.

How can I make the MIDI sound go through my soundcard when I select it as the track's output?

    I think he means "ears".

MIDI is not audio. Its computer instructions. They have to instruct an instrument in order to produce sound. Insert a softsynth in the synth rack, i.e., TTS-1 and set the output of the MIDI track to the TTS-1 and you will get audio.

Meh, I know about the difference between MIDI and audio already.

I've got the keyboard plugged into the "MIDI In" jack on my soundcard but I don't hear anything through the soundcard.
The "MIDI Devices" menu and the track view lets me choose between the "Microsoft Wavetable Synth", the keyboard's USB and the soundcard as outputs. None of these make any sounds in my headphones.

...or am I too stupid to understand your suggestion maybe...? In which case, could you clarify?

you don't choose a softsynth from the OUTPUT menu of the MIDI track and you won't hear anything from MIDI until you send its output to a synth of some kind.

MS Wavetable synth is a softsynth in the Microsoft windows operating system and that's why it shows up as an output on the MIDI track.  but don't use it.  use a SOFTSYNTH.

    INSERT>SOFTSYNTH>TTS-1

    Try starting there.

but you need to learn about softsynths.  do the tutorials in the help files.  specifically tutorials 4 & 8 are on softsynths.

Thank you Beagle, that really helped :D

    I'll do the tutorials.

    Thanks again!

EDIT2: So now I've got feedback from the soundcard, I play the DropZone (from the tutorial) via keyboard.
But when I try to record, only teeny-tiny Jr sounds are recorded. I can hold a note for a reeeeeeally long time and all that's recorded is a cut-off sound at the start of the note.

Now, what's this? Could it have to do with my soundcard? Is it DropZone? Or my keyboar/inputs/outputs?

    Anybody's got any ideas?

how exactly are you recording?  are you trying to record the audio or are you trying to record MIDI?

it doesn't make sense that it would sound different from you playing the keyboard through the softsynth as opposed to playback after recording.  they should sound the same.

No, it does not sound the same.

I'm recording MIDI. I'm playing the DropZone with my keyboard as input. I arm the track, press REC and play.

While recording, in my headphones it sounds as it should. But in the track view, only small dots appear at the start of every note.
The audio of each note is cut-off right at the beginning. For each note. And that's what I hear when playing back.

are you recording on a MIDI track, INSTRUMENT track or an AUDIO track?

when you say the dots show up at the start of every note, are you looking at the track view or the piano roll view?

What keyboard are you using and is it connected via USB or MIDI cables? If you hold a note down using the keyboard, the line representing the note should be as long as you hold the note.

Are you using a footpedal to hold the notes? If so, go to Option-Global-MIDI and make sure the Controller box is checked.
