Recording Levels

I am using 8.5, a Motu 8pre interface, and a Presonus Eureka preamp. When recording guitar with a Line6 XT Live, I notice that the input level on the hardware never clips but the armed recording track spends alot of time in the red. It sounds good in the head phones and in my monitors. Is this acceptable for recording?

When I guess my question is this:
As long as my 8pre isn't clipping do I need to worry about the level being displayed in Sonar when recording?

Turn down the track levels (volume or trim) so nothing goes above -6 dcbs ... and all is well (methinks)

I  don't worry about the occasional red zone incursion by a meter..... I do try to keep the levels below red but I don't sweat a few red blinks.

I am also not a "by the book" kind of person when it comes to recording. I tend to listen to the results, and if it sounds good to me...I let it roll.
