emu 1820m & round trip latency
I have a chance to pick one of these units up.
Anyone have the numbers on RTL?
Any conflicts with Sonar PE?

your latency is going to be dependent on your computer as much as it is the soundcard. that particular soundcard can probably get round trip latency of 12msec IF your computer is up to it.
it will work fine with all versions of Sonar

Hey, thanks Beagle.
Do you think it would be a good idea to but a M Audio 192 for when I need to record in the box while monitoring software instruments and effects, and use the 1820m for everything else?

no. it's never a good idea to try to use 2 different soundcards. they have different clocks and they will track differently. pick one and use it exclusively for recording and monitoring.

What is your opinion regarding building a system around the emu 1820m. Is it too outdated to be the centerpiece of a new build?

I have an 1820m, plus a back-up 1820m sitting on the shelf. I will use it til I can't use it no mo (i.e., the latest version of Windoze OS I use won't support it or whatever the reason happens to be). Hopefully that day is a long way off. It is a crystal-clear/transparent interface......I really like it, but the Patchmix DSP portion will take some getting used to if you are new to it.

I will agree with JV here. the 1820 shouldn't be going away anytime soon - it's a solid performer and has good drivers. they even came out with a PCIe version recently.

M. Walker at SOS used an Emu for his "benchmark" converter for years. He had a some high-end stuff, too, but used it for regular joe comparision. He declared the TC Konnekt a little better last year - by a red hair. So it is still very good, and that ain't going to change. Indeed, any modern convertor should do the job well.
You'll get more kick from the preconversion chain - room acoustics, mic, preamp, effects, monitoring.

Wow, thanks Beagle, JayJayVee, and AT for sharing your knowledge with me.
I am definitely in the analysis paralysis stage of research now, but it seems that I cannot get the sonics and features of an EMU 1814m and ultra-low-round-trip-latency in one package without busting my budget.
I wish I could afford the RME or the Lynx stuff. That seems like the answer, but at this point that is out of the question.
Am I being too obstinate in my quest, or is there an answer to this riddle?
