How convenient is it to have 24GB RAM for Sonar 8.5.3?
Hello everyone I wanted to ask how much profit can one have from getting all the RAM for the new desktop mobos out there nowadays (up to 24GB) in Sonar (may it be the x32 or x64 version). The idea seems very alluring to me, but the majority of VST large libraries ***edit -the ones I have lol- are 32bit (dunno if large amounts of RAM would serve any other purpose besides that on a sequence). I have been testing the BitBridge capability opening my sequences in the X64 version of Sonar, but sometimes libraries or FX plugins won´t open/appear. Overall the 64 version seems less stable.. I must be doing something wrong lol Thanks for reading, and your opinions

umm yes I know that, I guess I should have been more clear about it --sorry I guess what I'm asking is Is there anyone out there using say 21-22GB of samples without issues? thanks again

If your libraries aren't 64 bit then there's not much point in getting 24 GB of RAM. Like Scott said, you need everything to be 64 bit (OS, DAW, Synths, Plugins) to truly take advantage of large amounts of RAM. Otherwise, you're just wasting money. However, most of the big sample libraries are native 64 bit (i.e. VSL, EWQL, Omnisphere, GPO, Kontakt) so I'm not sure which liabrary you're speaking of.

Not me though. But if you go to the soundsonline forums you will hear about lots of people using that amount and more.

Oh ok, yes that's what I wanted to know. I guess I'm not so up-to-date on the libraries I have (the prices keep on going up and up and money's a bit tight now). So what you're saying is that there's a limit to what BitBridge can do right? Thanks

Theoretically, Bitbridge 2.0 (the one that comes with Sonar 8 and above) can take advantage of up to 128 GB of RAM. However, there are some limitations and even compatibility issues with it. Your library may or may not work properly, but that's a risk you take. Among its limitations are higher CPU consumption than if the plugin was native and a limit of up to 4GB (maybe less) per server (meaning, you need to assign a certain amount of plugins to each Bitbridge server without going over the 4GB limit). But again, most of the big sample libraries are native 64 bit and some are not even that expensive anymore....they're getting cheaper actually. EWQL, for example, has a sale going on almost every day. Not long ago they had a 3 for one sale with the ability to choose just about any of their products. Which library are you using?

EWQL, you're quite right. I want the Hollywood Strings badly, but +$1650 is still too much for me.. Specially since I'm planning a hardware update -from Quad to i7-. I have the old 32bit SO (just the Gold edition) and I work my way around things with that, for the time being. Thanks for the help Jose and Scott

But you can't access all that RAM unless you're using SONAR 64-bit under Windows 64-bit. Also of note: - You need Win7 x64 Pro to address more than 16GB of RAM.
- The RAM (six 4GB sticks) will likely cost more than the rest of the entire DAW.
Only the most extreme of situations will benefit from having 24GB of RAM. This would typically be serious composers... who need to run a slew of large/elaborate libraries (Hollywood Strings, etc) For most folks... 6-12GB is more than adequate.

More helpful info Yes I know RAM is expensive, but I would be considering working my way up to it (one or two sticks at a time) Much appreciated

I suppose if you're into video editing too it might be worth considering

I'm running 12 GIG DDR3 RAM and not come anywhere near running out of RAM. I'm not doing orchestral composition but using lots of samples in Supereir drummer 2.2.2, KOMPLETE 6, Independence 2.5.3 full version. I also do some Video work using ADOBE CS5 and Premiere Pro, Photoshop and After Effects are all native 64 bit now and benfit greatly from the extra RAM. Of course faster high end graphics cards will also help get the most out of 64 bit for those programs. i7 and 12 gigs just runs so smooth.

the more ram in computer, the more advantage it will has. if your mainboard is 32bits, you can't get so many ram. if your is 64bits address buses, you can install ram nearly as much as infinite. however, most of mb has a limit to get a good feature.
