leaping from FW to USB....advice?

My M-Audio 1814 FW is crapping out on me with my new Windows 7 computer. They want me to change a million things on my computer to get it to play nice, but so far nothing's really making any difference.

I have been reading recently about the very high quality of USB 2 interfaces...and I am ready to jump the FW ship.

I can spend about $300......any suggestions of what I should check out?
I really only need a few I/O, 2 XLR, a few balanced and maybe MIDI.

Thanks all!

There is a thread about the RME USB unit, but that is more expensive by far.

The Cakewalk interfaces are worth a look - that is where I'd start in that price range.

yeah...I've seen the RME one....$1299 out of my price range for sure! I'll check the Cakewalk ones. I know there's threads on them, but they're fairly new...I'm worried about bugs.....

thanks for the tip though! much appreciated...

cheaper usb interfaces may(probably wont) not give you as good low latency performance as the firewire unit-

This is only an issue if you use sofsynths a lot.

    Presonus AudioBox iTwo

Lots of plugins and softsynths and one shot samples, loops

    Hi Erin,

You want the FastTrack Ultra.  ~$350
Make sure to get the Ultra version... as this is the version that offers low round-trip latency.

MOTU UltraLite mk3. Not sure about the price though. It has both USB and FW interfaces.

I recently bought a Fast Track Ultra 8R to replace a defective Firewire unit.  So far it's working OK, no problems.  Lower latency than I had with the Firewire device, too.

This. True, tried and tested for many years. Around $200.
