I have to chime in here, because I couldn't understand the slight Genelec bashing that was going on here, until I looked up the 8020 model with 4" woofer. (The B model has the mains power switch on the back from the A model).

Genelec has always been a premier monitor of choice for many a quality studio (AFAIK) and you pay for them for this reason. Most people here don't believe anything with a woofer smaller than 6" can qualify as a decent near field monitor. I guess there is a place for everything, though and the reviews on this are very good. Sound on Sound review , Music_Tech_Review. My impression is that these were intended to be "very near field" monitors and perhaps Steve has already investigated and determined that this is one of his space requirements?  If this is not the case, then you may want to do some more investigation. Obviously, this particular monitor will not help your headphone situation, though.

8020s are, in my observation, intended for and used by corporate facilities with big budgets to simply confirm that there is sound on the media being previewed.

Then the media is sent in to a edit suite where realistically sized monitors are used.

all the best,

Jason
Those speakers are hi-fi speakers surely?
They are not much better than my B&W 601's
(http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/B-W...udioHiFi_HiFiSpeakers)

I really want something that is small and gives a true reflection of my mixes.
And I really want to hear a difference. I took some of my mixes on a usb stick in to the shop to try out the genelics (I recomend this as a good tip for anyone thinking of buying new speakers) and yes, they sounfded great but not husely different to my ears. The mixes that did sound different were lacking in lower bass frequencies.

I have quite a few reservations about the genelics asside from the cost.
The guy who tells me they are just what I need also told me that if I couldn't afford them I should get a good pair of headphones.
He recomended a pair of beyerdynamic DT100's so I went and bought some.
I have since discovered they are for monitoring and not mixing.
They have almost no bass (exageration) and so consiquently my mixes have become very bass heavy and now they sound awful on my B&W's.

Phil Spector used to mix on the cheapest pair of transister speakers and when asked why he said, this is what people will be listening to music on,
if I can make mixes sound good on these they'll sound good on anything. Imagine what they'll sound like on good speakers.

Those may not of have been his exact words but that, in effect was what he meant.

Steve

Thanks for the review links Tap
It was actually the genelic 8020"B's" and not "8020 "A's" that my friend recomended.
Not sure how great the difference is but am just reading a review on them.
http://www.htfr.com/more-info/MR312139

They retail at £500 but he said he could sell me a pair for £400 which is quite a price drop. Still much more than I'd like to spend though. I'm thinking maybe I should try getting a better pair of MIXING headphones and see how I get on with those.
I shall have words with him about the DT 100's he told me to get becuase I think they were a waste of money.

if you're going to mix for the 'lowest common denominator', things have changed since dead man walking spector used to mix albums.

Klipsch are THX certified components... most of them... check with them about which is for what. they are by far one of the best speakers I have heard.  Like I said even the computer speakers (left right and sub) are THX components and sound 10 times as good as Bose and for less than 1/4th the price.  Their horn technology is the smoothest sounding horn I have heard without processing out the wahzzzoooooo

The speakers you linked their are crap... just a regular spaeker off the shelf from a heap Chinese manufacturer and thrown in a box(like EAW does)... Klipsch is USA made and they take care when designing and/or choosing components.

Here is a link to the cheaper computer speakers (Left Right and Sub) that are THX certified components

http://www.amazon.com/Kli...-Speaker/dp/B000062VUO

How about these... space saving wall mounted THX certified:

Or these are the bad boys that can also be wall mounted...

Here is the subwoofer to go with the bad boys just above

If you switch to powered monitors, you should get something to control the volume to the monitors and to provide headphone outs.
A very cheap behringer mixer will do, or their monitor controller.
The Mackie Big Knob is a great monitors controller, but is pricey.
