video card specs?

I have ordered a new 32" 1080p monitor/tv and I'm thinking my existing video card isn't going to be up to the task. It has an NVidia GeForce 8500GT chipset and when I go to Display/Settings the options listed for resolution don't get anywhere near 1900x1080. First question, am I using the right method to ascertain my card's maximum resolution, and, if not, then what are some recommendations for a new card (passive cooling, GeForce chipset, PCI-e)?

Thanks!

    • One dual-link DVI outputs for digital flat panel display resolutions up to 2560x16005

Something does not seem right. What is your current video card exactly, and what onboard memory? What is your OS? Do you have the latest drivers? Are you currently using a DVI connected monitor?

You'll only see that resolution once it's connected to a monitor that is capable of displaying that resolution.

My current monitor is a Samsung 19" SyncMaster 913v, Asus EN8500GT 512MB card, XP SP3, latest Nvidia drivers, connected through D-sub - no DVI on monitor.

Now that I've dug out the original box, there is a table on the back that lists Refresh rates and it goes well past 1920x1080 so that would suggest that the card is capable. So, as suggested by Twigman, it must be a function of the monitor it's connected to, in which case I should be fine.

That card seems to be fully capable of 1920x1080. Make sure you are using the current Nvidia drivers and not the Windows drivers.

FedEx is supposed to drop off my new monitor this afternoon so I'll have more information, field tested, by tonight or tomorrow.

FedEx was right on time and the new monitor is now connected and running great at full HD 1920x1080.
