MC5 Export to earlier versions of MC: Can it be done?

I did a search of the forum looking for threads that might address my question but didn't see any. If there is one, my apologies and please point me to that thread. Otherwise...

I recently purchased Cakewalk MC5 on the advice of someone I jam with who uses MC3. The question is, can I export my MC5 files so he can use them? I'd rather not convert them to MP3s or some other file type if I don't have to, I'd rather keep them in the MC native file format so we can add new tracks at his place. So, can it be done, either using MC5 or some other translation or export utility?

TIA for any helpful responses, even if the response is "no, it can't be done."

the cwp and cwb (which you'll need to use if you have any audio in the project) versions can be imported/exported into any version forward or backward by design.  sometimes it doesn't work, but that's the way it's designed to work.

another consideration, however, is that if you have plugins or softsynths that he doesn't have, he'll get an error message that they're missing.  same for you.

Yeah... I think that is possible... I only have 4 & 5 but I can work on a project in either that was created or modified in either.  I don't know how far back you can go.....

I think it was around the time of MC 2003 or Pro 24 that they changed the file types. What used to be .wrk was now .cwp, so you should be good to go when sending a project file (.cwp) or bundle file (.cwb) to your friend.
And audio is audio, so if you send a .wav file on a CD, it will work perfectly well with his program.

Thanks for all the responses. It appears I can do what I was hoping to do. When I get the chance to try this out, I'll get back and let you guys know how it went. Thanks again.

Just to add, I do know from experience that you can go from m/c 3 through m/c 5 and also into the full sonar 8, both back and forward. As beagle noted, some plugins and soft synth problems will come up, but knowing that in advance will give you the opportunity to make provisions for it, ie., don't place the plugins or just use the same soft synth that both versions have, or bounce the synth to audio in advance, things like that.
