Does quality of firewire cable matter? Can I use any cable to connect to my Profire?

I am becoming a owner of a new Macbook pro soon which I intend to use with my Profire 610 soundcard. But as you know, the latest Macbook pros have Firewire 800 connections and I need an adapter to be able to use my soundcard on it.....Do I need to look for good brand cables or can the cheap ones too do the job.....This is the one I ordered for my use on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=290408037119

At £3.99, it is a cheap firewire cable.....But there is no brand name mentionned with it! Do i need to be worried? When I asked for the price of a firewire adapter cable at my local Apple store, they mentionned a higher price that this.....Is there a need to be careful about what firewire cable I use or do all of them serve their purpose?

I have no experience with firewire.  However, it's my understanding that informed consensus view of cable quality/price in the world of Audio and Video is that one should avoid buying cables in big electronic stores.  They give you great prices on flat panel TVs etc., but you pay a ridiculous premium for the little extras like cable connectors.  There are great sources of budget priced cables of all sorts on the internet.  I've never had any problems with USB or HDMI budget priced cables, both of which would show immediate evidence of shoddy quality.  Amazon.com reviews seem to support this view.

It does matter! I bought a cheap cable, 6 m (20 feet), and my computer sometimes didn't even recognize my device. I returned the cable and got a much more expensive one. No problems at all.

    I think common sense dictates...
Use a reasonably good quality cable.
It doesn't need to be overly expensive... but I wouldn't use a bargain-bin cable.
    Same with eSATA, audio, etc...

I don't know if it really matters. I've got some "good quality" firewire and USB 2.0 cables and I've got some cheap e-bay cables.  They all work equally and either I got lucky or it doesn't matter.

But, an overpriced and overhyped cable such as Monster won't make it work better.

Oh Darn firebred, I was going to tell them they needed the most expensive Monster cable they could find.
But yes, I agree it matters.

So, I guess my 'expensive' cable was about $24, and the cheap one was $10 for 5m.

Agreed. I got mine at Best Buy. It's very shiny and elegant... and works good too.

I would be grateful if some of you would point out to good brands! If you look at the link that I put in my first post on this thread, you will note that there is no brand mentionned! It could be just an ordinary cable, I don't know! Haven't received it yet! But I do hope it will work well! Work is not enough! Work well is what I want! Someone here mentionned 24$ for a cable while I paid only $3 something without shipping......There must be a problem with the quality of that cable, I will find out when I get it in some few days....Please do post some links to some good cables on sale on ebay....A firewire 800 to 400 adapter.....I bet you people would know how to choose a good one! Thanks a lot

Well, it is really hard to make a call. You never really know what the margin is. I bought an extremely cheap cable for my camera because I had misplaced the original one (Nikon to USB). The cable was 1 cent + $3.99 for shipping. And the quality is quite okay. I bought the cheap firewire cable from a store, and I guess they bought it for $0.5 and sold it for $10. The quality was really poor...
If there is enough competition, you more or less get what you pay for. You can always pay a lot more to get either 'professional' quality (like connectors that won't break if you step on them) or 'esoteric' value.
If you go for the cheap stuff, it's a gamble. The postage for returning it may be 50% of what you paid. I would look at the reviews. If nobody complained about c....y quality, it may be a good deal.

It's 1's and 0's. The only thing that matters is build quality. If it's a working cable in an installed environment where the connectors are not likely to get damaged/yanked etc then it doesn't matter. 1's and 0's either work or they don't, its on or off, connected or disconnected. So as long as the cable is working then any quality will do. If you buy cheap, it might break, but that's all i'd be worried about.
