DS864 File Import?

heya... anyone know if there is ANY software which imports or converts DS864 files? i like some of the sounds that Cakewalk put out for the DS864 (like the voice sounds) but i don't know of ANY software which reads the DP8 format. Awave Studio & Chicken Systems Translator Pro don't support the file type. i know this is kinda old since most of Project5 was discontinued, but i love sounds and don't want to lose access to the DS864 sounds just because DS864 is being pushed off the mortal coil...

I have P5 , but not installed it. Is it a Dx instrument or part of p5 itself? I would say you could rewire p5 to sonar (32 bit version)

if it uses the SFZ format to do the groupings etc. you could just load the sfz into dim pro.

Nope, even worse, it's a monolithic format, so you can't even get at the samples.   Maybe the best option would be to use a vst resampler like Sample Robot or ESC's vsti converter function.  Except that I don't think they support DXi import.  Maybe a feature request to include the better ones in Dimension format.

I like the vocal patch with the DS864 also. I created my own multi-samples (with Sound Forge) and then created an SFZ file. Now I can use Dim Pro and the results were good. So it's a little time consuming, but cheap and fairly easy.

DS864's native formats are closed and there is no published information about how to get at the samples.  If you or someone you know is a good programmer you might be able to reverse engineer the file format, but this will take a lot of time and effort--it may be easier just to manually resample the sounds you want from DS864.

i'm glad other people have shown interest. if anyone here uses/likes/wants Chicken Systems' Translator Pro (it seems pretty excellent) to convert from Sampler to Sampler... i recommend contacting them to ask about DS864 support. i asked and the following was their response:

"We are pretty busy with lots of stuff. DS864 is one of those things that kind of "wait until someone asks for it". We have the format figured out but never bothered to write the code.

    If you can:
    1) Send us an example .ds8 (?) file that you want to convert www.yousendit.com (We have some .ds8's but just in case)
    2) Bug us when you don't hear from us
    3) (optional) Buy the program if we say we'll include it (not before we include it, but just promise - make it worth our while)"

EDIT: once i get my banks and patches sorted out, i AM going to send a couple of my favorites to them and i DO plan to buy Translator Pro (i have a version made specifically for the Alesis Fusion workstation, so i'm eligible for an upgrade price). i figure Cakewalk has no interest in this, so why even ask... anyone think we SHOULD specifically request Cakewalk to add DS864 import to Dimension or other Cakewalk Instruments?

I could be wrong, but I doubt Cakewalk will expend resources for that.  I believe most if not all of the samples that were provided with DS864 are from 3rd parties so there may be other ways to get them.

Or, if not available from 3rd parties then someone who wants them bad enough could always resample them in the digital domain by inserting DS864 into a host track, feeding it MIDI data, and exporting the resulting audio to .wav file.  Once that is done the samples can be massaged and tuned and tweaked and brought into virtually any other sample-playback instrument that allows loading of .wav files.  It is a lot of work but certainly doable if one wants them bad enough.

But the response from Chicken Systems is interesting.  May be worth pounding on their door.
