64 or 32 Bit OS

I have the option of 64 or 32 bit Windows 7 on my new computer/ operating system. My sound card (Firepod) supports both. Which Windows 7 would be best?

Sonar 8 PE, Windows 7 32 bit, Intel w/H55 chipset, Intel Core i5 3.2GHz,2x Seagate 500GB SATA,4GB DDR3/1333, Presonus FP10, Roland TD 20, Mapex Maple, Paistie, and a bunch of other noise making stuff.

64bit is the paradigm now (unlike a year ago).

you should look at your existing DAW and the plugins that you currently own. Most of the older stuff is 32 bit....and putting it on a 64bit OS can result in it being non-functional. So use that as a guide.  The non-functional software will require you to spend more money to buy again or upgrade to the 64 bit version. Depending on your software collection, that could be expensive.

I just built a new box and intentionally went with XP @32 bits.... because I have a nice selection of software and do not have a need to upgrade any time soon. If I did not already have a lot of 32 bit software, I would probably have gone the 64 bit OS route.

Next time I upgrade, I understand that I will be buying or buying the upgrades for a lot of software. My box and it's processor supports 64 bit OS..... but call me retro.... I am satisfied for now with the 32bit stuff.

Which version of SONAR do you have, and how do you use it in general (mostly RAM-hungry VSTs or mostly live audio tracks?)? Some versions of SONAR work more reliably in 64-bit environments than others.

Otherwise, Guitarman and Philip both have valid points. It really depends upon the software you currently have and how much you want to spend to replace/upgrade it with native 64-bit versions.

It would also help to know how much RAM you have or are planning to get.

Sonar 8PE is on the way. New computer on the way.  RAM: 4GB DDR3/1333. I will be using the system primarily for recording drums, acoustic and Edrums, band, etc..

The computer shipped today with Windows 7 32 bit so I will give it a go and see how it works out.

planetearth, I see that you are in Tampa. I grew up there, Forest Hills area.

With 4 GB of RAM, you're not going to get much more out of a 64-bit OS than a 32-bit one. A 32-bit OS can access a little over 3 GB of RAM; what's left between that and your 4 GB won't make that much of a difference--especially if you have to deal with a lot of 64-bit driver issues.

I'm just around the corner from Forest Hills...I think. That's near Fowler and Nebraska area, right? Too bad you're not still in the area--I need a drummer!

Thanks for the info! I may work my way back down there one day. I have a lot of family in the area. Tampa was a great place to grow up in my day.

from what I understand, it is supposed to be fairly simple to set up W7 for a dual boot option...... whereupon, you could install XP or some other OS on the second partition.

    Only if you need it....
