896HD woes...RESOLVED!

I posted the following over at the motunation forums but thought i would double up here. If anyone has any ideas please post 'em up! Earl

Well, I considered myself amongst the lucky. I have a modded 896HD that has performed flawlessly for over two years. But alas, no more...

Worked fine yesterday, went in the studio today, flipped it on and all I get is the dreaded christmas tree lights that never stop.

Running XP Pro w/SP2. Also, I have an 8Pre connected to the 896HD via optical but the 8Pre was turned off as it usually is.

I didn't have time to pull it out of the rack today but I seem to remember something about a switch on the side of the unit that will reset it. If so, obviously I want to try this first.

I found the 10 page post started by Mike Rocha but I'm really not comfortable with all the procedures listed there.

Any thoughts why this would happen and if there is an easy fix?

Thanks in advance!

Earl

I'm sorry to hear of your troubles. I have 2 896HDs but I do not have a suggestion for you

I just did not want you to feel ignored. Good luck.

I've seen a sudden power-outtage "lock up" a MOTU audio interface.
In this case, the power switch was engaged when power was lost... and when the power came back on (power switch still engaged), the 896HD was locked up.
After powering down and back up... the 896HD worked as expected.

    Thanks Jim!

Well, after more chasing today I found out, when the 896HD firewire cable is disconnected from the computer, the 896 initializes properly. So then I tried plugging the firewire into my 8Pre. That unit then didn't initialize properly.

In addition, I noticed an external firewire/USB hard drive was not being seen either. When I hooked it up using it's USB port, it worked fine.

So, at this point I'm guessing it's an issue with my TI Firewire card. I have one in another machine and will cannabalize it tomorrow and report back. I hope that's all it is.

Pretty much narrowed it down to the on-board firewire. I have a PCI-e TI firewire card due in Wednesday or Thursday.

So happy to find out it doesn't appear to be the 896HD! With the BL mod it is a quite awesome piece of gear.

As it turns out, it was a bad fire wire card. Put a new one in this evening and, voila! She worky now!

$42 fix! I love it when a plan comes together.
