First, get the best possible sound recorded without any effects. Raw tracks, optimum quality recording. Learn your gear.
Then, optimize each track indidvidually with as little eq and compression as possible.
Then determine what is necessary in the final mix, using as little effects as possible.
Key, minimal effects, maximum quality recording of clean individual tracks.
Important statement you made....Theres so many effects to choose from !!!!
Truth is, there are too many. I collected all of them, played with all of them, and threw almost all of them away. Now, I use a good multi-band compressor, a twenty freq. eq, and a good reverb unit.
Sometimes some delay, sometimes a few "tricks", but rarely and sparingly.
