Archive or freeze
Hi what is the best way that enables you to save CPU,is it to archive,or to freeze. Some of my projects can have 30 or 40 tracks and can sometimes crackle a little,so recently I have been archiving, eg.Superior Drummer, and a couple of soft synths, I also have a few effects in the effects bins,on the tracks,so my CPU reading can sometimes be 50% or a little higher,or is there a better way to do this, to get my CPU reading down. Thanks John

Archived tracks become muted, if I am not mistaken. So when you want to save CPU but also hear the tracks, freeze option is the way to go. Use Archive instead of Mute to preserve some CPU power.

Freezing takes all the plug-ins out of play (midi synth and anything in the FX bin) which saves cpu and ram. When you unfreeze the plug-ins re-load. Freezing is a great way to go because if you save the project with the drums frozen for example, re-opening your project is much faster because you are not loading the drum library into memory.

Hi Geno, I just had a look at a project and froze the synths,CPU dropped, more than just archiving them !! Cheers John

Hmm... I hadn't thought about that, but Archiving probably only applies to the current track and not the software synth. So to get the maximum benefit for soft synth tracks you could both freeze and then archive. Although, you probably don't need to go that far. Scott -- Scott R. What about bouncing to an audio track and then shutting off the synth? Gordon.

What about bouncing to an audio track and then shutting off the synth? That's also an option, but it's the same as freezing, only less convenient. Freezing also gives you the option of not printing effects and leaving the fx bin active, which is handy. Archiving is what you do when you want to take a track completely out of the mix. Muted tracks may still consume CPU and are still figured into the delay compensation calculations. Archived tracks are completely ignored during playback and mixdown.

Thanks Bit! I guess I've avoided freezing because of problems I've heard people having. To keep my fx bin active, I've been putting the fx on the bounced-to audio track. I try to keep the audio track to at most two layers -- the current synth output and the previous synth output. Perhaps it's time to revisit freezing, though...I no longer remember what the problems were that people were having... Gordon.

I generally bounce synths etc to audio tracks and then archive everything that's not audio before I start any mixing. I prefer working with audio tracks; I like the feeling that nothing is going to change when I'm not looking. So I tend to go to audio at the earliest opportunity. (I can always un-archive stuff and rebounce that bit if I really need to make a change.)

I freeze softies and transfer the audio to another track. I then un-freeze and archive those tracks. I'll then go into synth rack view and turn off the softie. But that's just me.
