Step Sequencer is "Out Of Step"!

Step Sequencer is "Out Of Step"!

I have just started trying to use the step sequencer for creating drum tracks from scratch (after watching the excellent drum videos by Cakewalk on YouTube)
 
I can run the Step Sequencer and it is fine for the first 4 or 5 passes but after this it goes out of sync and misses the first beat of the bar
 
The meters are not indicating the PC is under any strain - any ideas?
 
I am on SONAR PE 8.5.3.282 running VISTA and using an M-Audio Fast Track Ultra
 
Anyone else had this issue and any ideas of things I can try to fix it

    After some more investigation I have found that the issue is NOT with the Step Sequencer so I will start another thread with the issue...
