MidiMan (M-Audio) MIDISPORT 4x4, Windows 7 x64 & Sonar x64 users - please read - SOLVED

I've recently bought a MIDIsport 4x4 (not anniversary) from ebay, downloaded the x64 beta drivers, and installed it (eventually).

I'm using 2 of the ports to run a MCU and a XT controllers. The other 2 ports are currently unused.

The problem I am having is that I have to uninstall the driver and then let it re-install on the next boot to get it working, every time. If I don't do this as soon as I start Sonar the two in use port lights, both in & out, go crazy as if they are being flooded by a MIDI data stream. Sonar won't recognise that the MCU & XT are there, although it does see the MIDIsport drivers in the MIDI devices list.

The only way to fix this and get it working is un-install the 4x4 driver via the device manager and then cold reboot the computer. (A warm reboot won't work). Not the end of the world but annoying all the same.

Is anyone else using the 4x4 on windows 7 x64 with Sonar x64? If so are you seeing the same problem? I've tried setting the MIDIsport device service to "Run as Administrator" makes no difference. I've also posted this issue to the beta driver report thread on the M-Audio forums, a release driver is on the way apparently. Any help appreciated thanks.

I had another issue but almost the same...I had to connect-disconnect the usb cable once sonar has opened and the restart sonar to make midi works until i installed the last version drivers, just do this and you'll fix the problem up! I guess so...

the 64 bit win 7 drivers for my ozone need updating also, they pop / click and can't keep a fixed sample rate. but well they don't bother to read the emails just fire off.. uninstall / reinstall verbatium thing WITHOUT actually reading the email.

I sold my midisport interfaces. The timing is crap, and support sucks, and the drivers are worse. Do yourself a favor and pick up the Edirol interfaces that are endorsed by cakewalk.

    I'm using this:

You can link three of them together for 9x9 use if you need to go that many ins and outs. The drivers are excellent. Running one track on the midi loop back test, I can get a consistent 2ms. It's the best interface I've ever owned.

I would not have gotten any MIDIsport that did not support Vista or Windows 7 and sure not 64 bits. That is the problem. The one you have is unsupported.

A better deal is the CW USB UM3G. You get a guaranteed to work MIDI interface with Sonar and has all the drivers you need.

Make sure you don't have a MIDI feedback loop. If your synth is sending to Sonar and Sonar is sending it back and the synth is echoing it, you'll get a MIDI feedback loop.

I used a pair of MIDISport 2x2s for years and they are solid. I only stopped using them because M-Audio didn't have a Windows 7 x64 driver for them and I didn't want to wait for it.

    Hi FBB

What John and Resonant Order said is quite true.

There is one final thing you can try if you havent already - download the Win 7 X64 driver for the Anniversay Midisport 4x4 - I've read elsewhere that it  [ should ]  work for the   non-Anniversary model.

If this is the driver you have already tried and it isnt working - ditch the Midisport and get the Edirol UM3EX - I got rid of my Midisport and got the UM3EX - best midi-related move I ever did.

Heaps tighter timiing - noticably better-latency-triggering under heavy loads  *AND*  brick-rock-solid  Win 7 X64 driver.

    You wont regret it.

M-Audio   [ sadly ]  arent the company they used to be - in the space of  2 years - from around 2005 - 2007  -  they went from having the most solid and well supported driver architecture of almost any company, to today, having very hit-and-miss-drivers.

I got fed up with driver delays for MIDISPORT 4x4,  it took forever to release Vista-32, even longer for Vista x64.   Well never went to Vista anyway so it didn't matter.

Technically Win 7 x64 is not supported and there's mixed reviews out there whether Anniversary drivers work or not.

I sold mine about a year ago not and haven't regret it.    Haven't replaced it yet though hear  Cakewalk and MOTU USB MIDI products are stable and publish drivers shortly after new versions of Windows and Mac OSX are available.

    Thanks for all the replies.........

I realise that getting the MIDIsport wasn't the brightest move I've ever made but then it was only £30 and I needed something at the time to fix my ebay habit.

Timing isn't really an issue, I'm only using it to run an MCU an XT from, they work fine once it is installed.

Latest driver is installed, in fact the only driver and it's still in Beta. M-audio, according to their website, are still working on a full release driver for 7 x64 but having issues with the Beta driver and Pro tools. The anniversary driver doesn't work for me.

I don't think it's any sort of feedback loop because once the driver's re-installed it works perfectly without changing any connections/settings.

Guess I'll have to live with remembering to un-install the driver just before I shut down and wait for the full driver release or get it back on ebay and spend even more ££.

    Thanks again.

Just an update for anyone having similar issues that may find this thread - this problem mysteriously fixed itself, or so it seemed. The beta drivers finally became full release and nothing changed. (I frequently forget to uninstall)

Then all of a sudden it started working without the uninstall/re-install process. At first I couldn't work out what I was doing different or changed and then it dawned..... DOH.... I've just upgraded to 8.5.

So for anybody searching threads for info on the MIDIsport 4x4 and driver issues. I can report that it now works perfectly on Windows 7 x64 with Sonar 8.5 x64.........
