USB 3.0 Hub

First time I've seen a 3.0 hub.  Looks like 3.0 is here, although I haven't seen any products that have 3.0 capability yet.

USB 3.0 hub allows you to connect up to four different gadgets and transfer data from them in speeds of up to an amazing five gigabits per second, well it was originally designed to connect then smart phones to PCs in the mid-90.

USB Hubs are not data "transfer" units as you suggest.  They are "dumb" units and must rely on a PC for it's host application.  You can't use it as a "smart hub" such as an Ethernet hub to connect devices and have the devices communicate with each other.   A USB hub only allows more than one USB device (such as a hard drive, DVD drive, control surface, etc) to connect to one USB port in a PC.  If the PC's port is USB 2.0 then the USB 3.0 hub will only work at USB 2.0 speed, not 3.0 speed.

Before anyone gets too excited, here is a quote from Martin Walker in the August issue of Sound on Sound.

Superspeed USB 3 may be just arriving on a PC near you, but its already about to be superseded in the battle of the I/O formats. Intel are hoping to ship components for their latest Light Peak optical cable technology sometime in 2010 and with bandwidths starting at 10Gb/s and the potential of 100Gb/s capability within 10 years, this is getting a lot of people excited. Intended as a universal replacement for PCI Express,SATA,SCSI,USB and Firewire. Light Peak consists of an Intel controller chip and an optical module that performs all the electricity to light conversions. Cables can be 100 metres long and of course the optical design removes any possibility of ground loops.

Now they are getting serious. The existing formats should all be replaced with something like this. I would wait and see what happens here before rushing out and building a machine just to get USB 3. Looks like its already old hat.

I would think that USB 3 would be good for connecting an external hard disk.  USB 2 just isn't fast enough.

Presumably you were trying an external hard disk which had a USB 3 connection?

If you connect a USB 2 disk to a USB 3 port you get USB 2 speeds.
